Chew On This - Part III

Gum is not the same as it used to be; is anything? Have you noticed that you cannot get regular gum anymore? It's all sugarfree. So if you just want natural sugar and not chemical additives, you're out of luck. Do you remember Chicklets, little squares of gum covered with a hard candy shell? They were my favorite, and seem to be totally gone now. At least I can't find them anywhere. In their place are these Mini-Chicklets, extremely tiny. Double Bubble used to be my favorite bubble gum, now I can only find it at Cracker Barrell restaraunt in the candy nostalgia section. It does still come with the little comics, but is now so hard that it's unchewable. So I bought this roll of Hubba Bubba bubble tape in a tape dispenser. At least it's soft and you can unroll as much as you want. What next, a bubble gum stapler? In our hospital gift shop there are pink and blue cigars for new fathers to hand out. But they just look like cigars, they're really bubble gum. The hospital isn't allowed to sell tobacco products. My quest for good gum has been fruitless. The average American chews 300 sticks a year, something I find hard to believe. The ancient Mayans chewed chicle, which is sap from the sapodilla tree. Around the year 800, they met their end. Everything about them was abandoned, except the practice of chewing gum. Native Americans chewed the resin of spruce trees. And I used to chew Chicklets.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, the we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created." James 1:17

Hey..I'm waiting outside for takeout at a type of fusion- chinese, vietnamese and Thai restaurant. So I did some quick monitoring and saw this. I know, I remember that..and do avoid the sugar free- terrible! Chicklets was one of my favorites too! Too bad we couldn't make a hot new Mayan gum ball recipe and call it chiclelets!! Well, this makes me want a stick of gum Ginny!!

My favorite gum was this long rope kind - in watermelon flavor. My brother and I would try to put the whole rope in our mouths - chew - and then blow a bubble. Fun times - thanks for the memories!

at one time in the very distant past I was the bubble gum blowing champ. I could put four pieces of double bubble, my favorite then and blow a bubble so big that when it popped covered most of my face. those were the good old days. gum is not the same. we found one that is soft and keeps its flavor longer and is not sugar free. not bubble gum but gum, wrigley's winterfresh, the only one we can chew that does not get hard. I still like the flavored big balls that are a quarter in the gum ball machines. they only last a couple of minutes. this world has changed big time and not for the good

Awwww...Dubble Bubble gum. (It's only right this moment that I realized the spelling was off a bit.) I like gum. My teeth do not. But if I'm driving alone somewhere far, which is all of the time, I use it to keep awake. Helps a little.

Not much of a gum chewer, but I did love bubble gum. I won a bubble-blowing contest once.

If you find a good gum, let me know and I'll try it! Thanks for coming along with me to "Mitford". I really enjoyed it!

Thanks for keeping Jilly in your heart and prayers. She still needs them!

Best,
Bonnie

Double Bubble and Juicy Fruit gum. Oh yes, I loved them both - and especially the comic in DB. My favorite when I was a pre-teen was Thrills - a gum that looked like purple Chiclets and smelled like soap. Was this just a Canadian thing?

I'm with you . . . I liked Chiclets and bubble gum growing up. And Dentine . . . remember that? Those were the days, weren't they?!

I like chewing gum, but it's all the sugar-free variety.

I rarely chew gum any more but I like the memento's gum. I guess they are all sugar free now. I remember Double Bubble and Juicy Fruit from my childhood. There was also one called Bazooka bubble gum.
