Even To Your Old age

Meet Linda Huntley, a 63 year old grandmother of four. She lives nearby in Staunton, Virginia. She has a plaque on her mantle that says "Sing, Dance, Wear Red Lipstick". She has a white motorcycle with Betty Boop painted on the back. She's helping her daughter start a cheerleading school. And she may just become the new Ms. Senior America. Did you know that there's a Miss America pageant for seniors? I didn't, till I read this in the paper this weekend. That's where I snapped these pictures. Linda will be a contestant in the 25th annual Ms. Virginia Senior America Pageant on May 20. The other states will have their own competitions, too, and the winners go on to the national pageant in Atlantic city in October. She will tap dance to "Puttin' On the Ritz" wearing a white tuxedo, top hat, and cane. I wish they would televise this, I'd sure watch it!! But I guess only pageants with young contestants rate T.V. time. If this were on T.V., here's what I would be doing. I would watch it from my couch, with my feet propped up and a cozy throw over me. I would likely be eating ice-cream, and feeling both sad and glad that I'm not the one on stage doing all that dancing. What would you be doing?

"Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you." Isaiah 46:4

I'd be viewing not doing! However, I admire her spunk. I didn't have that much spunk when I was 21. I'm going to look for that white motorcycle next time I'm in town!

Re: Rt 11. I've driven it many times right through Staunton but perhaps not as far as Harrisonburg. In "olden days", we'd take a slow Sunday afternoon drive on Rt. 11. My mother (who didn't drive) didn't consider I-81 a proper place to be taking that drive on since one couldn't meander and stop for a closer look at plant life, etc.

Best,
Bonnie

I would be fighting my husband for the remote because he would not want to watch it. I would also be feeling jealous that i don't look that good and can't dance and have no energy for it if I did look that good. also would be thinking it is NOT FAIR she is 2 years younger than I am and looks GREAT

Well---with this knee problem, I'd definitely be watching it from my 'throne' (recliner). She's a neat lady---and I'll bet she stays healthy and in great shape all the way into her 80's....Mercy Me!!!!

I knew there was a Sr. Miss America pageant but I've never seen it nor heard much about it. Bet it would be fun to watch.

Hugs,
Betsy

Ginny: I couldn't get past page 50 in the first book until a friend begged me to finish it. By the end, I was hooked! I know those people! And, I so admire Jan Karon. Look up her bio and I think you will find her very interesting. She now lives in Charlottesville. You might see her around town, maybe in the new Olive Garden. I can't believe Charlottesville doesn't already have an Olive Garden!

Best,
Bonnie

I would be watching it if it were on television. And I'm pretty sure I would be rooting for Ms. Huntley.

I would definitely be itching to sign up for tap dance classes. Remember this is an old dream of mine.

I'm not quite so glam, though...maybe no pageants for me.

Hi Ginny.. Well, personally I don't know about Ms. Senior America, ha? but I honestly admire Jack La Lane..so maybe I'm not in this woman's shoes..I can think of a lot worse things to be doing. Ok, I'd be watching, ha. Sandra's comment is a riot! Ice cream sounds good with some pop corn!! (grin). Reminds me of something I saw recently about Sophia Loren "how you can smoulder when your older! Am I taking this too far?
Ya..I'm always wishing for more energy!

The couch, the ice cream and the cosy all sound good; but I think I'd use the remote to switch to another channel. No offence to Grandma Huntley, I just never enjoyed tap dancing all that much... ;)

This is a great story and I would love to see her perform but these days 63 isn't all that old for someone to be very active.

I have a blogger friend named DJan who is 67. She and a group of other seniors (mostly over seventy) do weekly hikes that would be considered difficult by some younger folks. She is also a skydiver.

Her blog is at http://djanstewart.blogspot.com/ Her post for today is not her usual subject, scroll down and check out her 'knees in the breeze' stories.
