A Bird In The Hand

"You are my hiding place;

you will protect me from trouble

and surround me with songs of deliverance." Psalm 32:7

These pictures show the story of what happened to us this evening. First you see the front porch of my best friend. There are many cats on the porch because she feeds and takes care of the stray cats on the block. And when we pulled up in front of the house, we saw this robin on the fence, cheeping and peeping nervously. Soon a second robin lit beside the first, and they were both very upset, as you can tell by the head feathers being rather puffed out. We quickly noticed this cat underneath them, by a bush. We assumed that they had a nest nearby that they were protecting, but we found something very different upon investigating. This little baby robin was hiding under the edge of the bush, hunkered down low and very still. His hiding spot was right where you see the cat sniffing. I believe the cat would have killed the baby had we not come. My friend feeds the cats very well, which is probably why the cat had not killed it already. Also, the baby bird had been instinctivly very still and quiet. The baby could not fly yet and was helpless, and we could not find the nest. So my husband picked him up and put him on the other side of the fence, away from the cats yard. He fluttered for cover and was soon out of sight, where I'm sure his parents greeted him. A bird in the hand is a most satisfying thing.

"Keep me as the apple of your eye;

hide me in the shadow of your wings

from the wicked who assail me,

from my mortal enemies who surround me." Psalm 17:8,9

What a nice image to take myself to bed on! My husband, too, is a "protector" of birds.

Best,
Bonnie

Oh I'm so glad you all were able to save that sweet little baby Robin. Wonder where the nest was....

I like cats ---but cats and birds don't go together... They are like oil and water....

You may have just saved one precious bird.

Great post... Love the pictures.
Hugs,
Betsy

Oh, that is one dramatic series of pictures... Really tells the whole story even without the words. (Know what, though? You should include that picture from the header in the post too, because otherwise it's not there later on if you go back to it.)

Oh Ginny, I am so glad you could save the little Robin. Now he will have a chance to grow up and sing for you.

My cat rarely goes outside and only when I am in the yard but we do have a couple of the neighbors cat in our yard sometimes. Last year I saw a little robin on the ground and a cat headed his way. I was going to put him in a tree but as I approached he found the strength in his wings to fly to the bush. I chased the cat away. This year I have one Robin that has been hanging out on the telephone wire above our backyard. He sings every evening. Coincidence? I don't know!

Wow, I love these shots Ginny!! The colors are beautiful with the green background and fence too. Amazing you caught them looking above that sneaky black cat. Incidently, those cats are really pretty too (very healthy looking)! How sweet..poor things, but so dedicated watching over her young! I admit, I love my cats, but I don't like it when they try to catch birds! Excellent post with the Psalm- and a happy ending! ha

Bless you for saving such a pretty little bird.
I love cats and have one myself but she is not encouraged to catch birds and I let them go when she does bring one in.
Lovely photos you have captured, they tell the story completely.
