The Main Attraction

The butterfly bushes are in bloom now. There are several different kinds, but this kind is easy for me to spot because it looks a bit like a skinny lilac bush. It is called butterfly bush because it never fails to attract butterflys, hummingbirds, and lots of other flying creatures. It's like a magnet to them. These are just a few of the little pretties that I snapped on a bush the other day. Lots of people plant these to attract butterflies, but there are better bushes for that purpose. In fact, this plant is considered to be an invasive and noxious weed. That is because it is not native to this country, and grows rapidly, pushing out other plants. It will survive almost any conditions, and the seeds will lay dormant for five years. It's extremly hard to get rid of, and yet so attractive to so many. Here's someone who attracted many, but not because of his looks. You might say he will always be the main attraction.

"He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows..." Isaiah 53:2,4

We had to chop down our Butterfly bush - it had gotten so big it was taking over the parking lot and the stairway..... I miss it though - and the butterflys!

We seem to be finding all the pretty but invasive species this week. I have a butterfly bush in my backyard in a large planter. It has been there for a few years and so far it hasn't spread.

The butterflies and Skippers(like the one in your photos) love it. Like you said it isn't really so beautiful but maybe it tastes sweet.

Here we grow the swan plant for the Monarch butterflies.

In school, we have a big bush, and some children are not afraid of handling the caterpillars.

I teach English as a second language, children from 5 to aa, and our school hours are 9 to 3 pm, Mon to Fri.

Friday evening is my favourite time, I know when I go to bed, I can sleep in on Sat.

On Sunday morning, I go the Mt Albert baptist Church,

Oh yes, the boat, I think was a replica, not a real Maori boat. I think it did leak.

People definitely need to do their homework when they plant things, don't they????? My mother used to say that about their Mimosa tree... I love those things --especially when they flower.. But--they are very invasive...

Have a great day.
Hugs,
Betsy

I love butterflies, too, and enjoy photographing them. Their delicate beauty is just one more reminder that God must love color and beauty, too.

I like your reference to Jesus being the main attraction.

Lovely scripture with your post Ginny! Theses are gorgeous and I think you did an excellent job! I used to catch those as a child..I had no idea they were that invasive. Suppose you could put them in a large contained area? There are types like that here and my husband just weed whacks around them (do to the terrain). Anyway..a plus if it draws butterflies and the like!
