Bleeding Hearts

Once upon a time, a young and poor man was in love with a beautiful and wealthy maiden. He gave her a pair of rabbits. She took them and thanked him, but said she didn't love him. Then he gave her a beautiful pair of silk slippers. She took them and thanked him, but told him she didn't love him. Then he spent all his money to buy her a beautiful pair of earrings. She took them, too, but still said she didn't love him. With nothing left to give, he took a knife and pierced his heart. And the first bleeding heart sprang up where he had died. The bleeding heart is from Asia, see the tiny drops of blood as they drip from the hearts? There is another one who was also pierced for us, but instead of growing a flower, it made all his believers immortal. And that's not just a fairy tale.

"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."
1 John 1:7

I love bleeding hearts and, now, the story that goes with them. I had a large plant for many years but it just disappeared over one winter. Maybe it bled to death?!

Great photos!

Best,
Bonnie

We had these tiny flowers in our last garden. One of the first to spring up each year.

My bleeding heart plant died. A friend and I were discussing how they might not be the best for around here. They bloom and look so healthy but as the heat gets going the plant turns yellow...no matter how much we water. Then mine died last year. They are so pretty.

Ginny, you have hearts! I see hearts everywhere. And you said you couldn't find hearts!

I love that story, it really fits the Bleeding Hearts.

Pam, I think they all do that. Just cut them back. They will come back next spring.

Our Swedish name for these would translate 'lieutenant's heart', I don't think I ever heard why - if it goes back to the same legend you told. My grandmother had a plant of these in the garden back in my childhood.

I've just been catching up on you last week of blogging though not commenting on every post.

really beautiful Ginny, the words, the thoughts, the photos and the scripture. you have a talent and a gift from God for seeing Him in daily life. I had not heard the story of the bleeding heart and now i wonder if she loved him after he killed himself...

Ginny,

I added this to my post Letter B.
Like Sarawakiana said, I wasn't going to give a commentary.

I am doing this for Ginny. It wasn't my church's kitchen, but it has something to do with my church. The ESOL staff of my church went for a train outing to Onehunga and we went to this Cafe for lunch.

The Barista won second prize. The girl is the barista, but I don't know if she is the one who won.

My church also has a Barista and we give visitors a cup of free coffee.

A barista (from the Italian for "bartender") is a person, usually a coffee-house employee, who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks. .

I loved seeing those pretty blooms and learning the story behind them. You are correct, two totally different bleeding hearts.

Hi Ginny, No, not a fairy tale. Our Savior bled and died as payment for our sins. I just love these flowers. I had never heard the story about them before. I am thinking of planting some in the fall. Have an excellent Friday tomorrow!

Never heard of that story - but I've always loved this plant. It reminds me of my grandmother because she had one when I was just a little girl growing up in Germany.

Sad story about the man. Great story about Jesus.

such an interesting story. I never heard that one before. I have a bleeding heart plant and I am always so amazed at the flowers and the shape of them. Ours bloom for a very short period of time...do yours bloom all season?
