Sellin' The Melon

The first seedless watermelon was developed in over 50 years ago. Every year more and more seedless varieties are being grown. Only sixteen percent of watermelons in grocery stores now have seeds. So the black seeded watermelon will soon be a thing of the past. Some people find seedless watermelons creepy, bland, and mealy. So we may be trading flavor for no seeds. What do YOU think? Here are some watermelon facts:
  • The largest watermelon ever grown weighed 268.8 lbs pounds.
  • Over ninety percent of a watermelon is water. The rest is sugar.
  • The first watermelons were grown over five thousand years ago in Egypt.
  • Richard LeFevre consumed 11-½ pounds of watermelon in fifteen minutes.
  • There are 1200 different varieties of watermelon.
  • In Japan, square watermelons are grown. They cost approximately $83 apiece.
  • Watermelons are actually vegetables, not fruits.

“Light is sown like seed for the righteous
And gladness for the upright in heart.
Be glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,
And give thanks to His holy name.”
Psalm 97

In many instances, flavor is sacrificed for convenience. I think the seedless watermelon is one of those instances. Besides, how can you have a watermelon seed spitting contest without seeds?

A 270 pound watermelon?? WOW. That's insane. I do like watermelon but I rarely have it for some reason.

Makes me think: Have you ever tasted watermelon sherbet? It's delicious. I look forward to it every summer season.

As for seedless watermelons, they have the white smaller seeds in most, but rarely a large black seed. At least that is the 'seedless' we have here in Texas and they are Texas Grown so they're exceptionally sweet, juicy and crisp!!

to me the watermelon with the black seeds taste much better than the seedless. i try not to buy seedless, but we have one right now and reading this about it being water and sugar, that added to grapes and cereal is not helping bob sugar at all.
lots of info here.

A veggie? I did not know that. So tell me - are there any vitamins in it? Or is all sugar and water?

I tend to like what is normal...I don't want yellow tomatoes and I prefer watermelons with seed. And I will say I had the best watermelon I ever in my life had last year...from my brother's garden!

I wonder if kids of the future will know what a watermelon seed spitting contest is?

Nope never been to China. That crumb catcher came from my grandmother's basement.

Wow, Ginny. Great facts on the watermelon! I cannot fathom a watermelon weighing almost 300 lbs!

I'm glad to learn that I'm getting my vegetables when I eat watermelon. It's been a long time since I've seen a black-seed watermelon.

I like watermelon but 11 1/2 pounds in 15 minutes is far too much for me. I also think I'm too cheap to buy one of those square ones.
I actually like the seedless watermelons and the ones we have here are delicious. Kind of sad to think that some day there will be no more watermelons seed spitting contests....lol

Good to know that watermelons are vegetables. I need to eat more veggies. :) I personally prefer the seeded ones,I think they have more flavour.

We've had several seedless watermelons the past couple of years --and loved them. I'd never go back to the ones with seeds...

Hi Ginny, I usually get the tiny "personal-sized" watermelons if I can during the Summer. They are "seedless" with a core of very tiny thin seeds. I like the size and flavor but the texture is not as pleasantly crisp as the regular big seeded watermelons. Have a great Friday tomorrow!

Square?? Too funny! This is some interesting info!!

Didn't know that watermelon is a veggie and not a fruit...Square watermelons??? Who would have thunk it.....?
I think most seedless watermelons lack sweetness and I don't care for the texture as much.

I would love to find a square watermelon to give to my grands. I like watermelon with seeds...not the tiny white kind of seed but the good old fashion spitting seeds. The ice cream watermelon looks tasty.

There is nothing quite like a cold, juicy slice of watermelon on a hot day. I don't mind the seeds but I do like the seedless variety. We have locally grown ones that are delicious.

The kitten is just a little gray ball of fur, not a Russian Blue.
