Gone Nuts

Here is what the green balls look like inside, like grass balls.

Inside the grassy looking balls, there are big black balls.

And it is here that we start to hammer!

And we have walnuts!! Real ones. Nature protects them with many different and hard layers.

And so we come to the end of our mystery!
“Families are like fudge — mostly sweet with a few nuts.” ~Author Unknown"

"The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you, so therefore you can look forward to sharing in God’s glory. It’s that simple.”

I've never seen a walnut growing on a tree, I thought they were sweet chestnuts when I first saw them. Lucky you.

Oh my, you know I almost said nuts yesterday but then I thought no can't be. I thought they looked like something I saw when I was a child on a walk through the woods with my father. He had picked some up to show them to me

I didn't know they looked like that in side, I wonder if any thing eats them but people. Very interesting.

I enjoyed your mystery very much, especially this post where you show all the work necessary to get to the walnut meat.

for a moment there, i thought those are "rambutan". We have fruit called Rambutan over here. when we peel off the skin, there is a sweet flesh in it.

We used to gather walnuts and hickory nuts when I was a kid. Like the shots with them on the trees below, too.

We always gathered walnuts when we were kids. I can remember at Christmas mom would have us crack them for her to use in cakes and candy.

Ginny, when I saw the green balls in your post below I knew they were walnuts. Our neighbor has a walnut tree in his yard near the property line. The squirrels get them and bury them in our yard. The grassy balls look like the outer covering of the chestnuts from our tree. The squirrels like those too once the covering comes off.

Reminds me of walks in the woods on relatives' rural property that was where my father grew up.

After a large gathering for a fall meal with extended family, my father would take all us youngsters out into the woods to explore. Always included was a visit to the walnut tree to collect the nuts. Your photos document what we would do, with the help of my father and his brothers, when we returned with our bounty.
