The Scooters

The nearby city of Harrisonburg has put electric scooters all around the downtown area, and the outskirts of it. They have become a hit! But now, some people do NOT like it! There is a petition to get rid of them. Why?

The scooters can go up to 20 M.P.H., and riders are not following the rules. They ride them on sidewalks, run red lights and stop signs in the streets, & park them sideways on the sidewalks, blocking the way. Would you sign this petition? If not, what should be done?

Goodness! I never heard of this before! If they are provided free of charge - well, that may well be the problem. What people don't pay for they don't take responsibilty for. Human nature is funny like that....

a scooter like this travelling at 20 MPH and running into you could do u great injury.

That is a really cool idea. Why is it that there are always a few inconsiderates who have to ruin it for everyone else. I can see how it could get dangerous though if someone ran in to someone with one of these. Chances are the city would end up getting sued over the injury since they are the ones providing the scooters

Nobody steals them?

I would sign the petiton to remove them. unless they enforce laws with them, and keep them off sidewalks and make them abide by the rules. free is never good, people will always abuse things but even more so when it is free. seems like a crazy idea to me.

Several cities around here provide bicycles, but I am not aware of any that provide electric scooters. If people can't follow the rules when they're provided something, especially if it is free, they should just have to do without.

How do these not get stolen, Ginny? In our town they would be gone by the time nightfall hit, on the day they were put out. :-( Our town does do rental bikes but nothing for free... of course! :-/ Lovingly, Andrea xoxo

I agree with someone who suggested that people need to pay for their use.Even if the amount was minimal, it would likely keep the trouble makers away.

I am of two minds about this. They are a great way to get around but when I saw these in Baltimore, there is a pathway laid out for them right next to where you walk, and if you weren't careful you could side step into a scooter's path. Some of the people using them were going way too fast in my opinion. There were smaller children walking around too. It gave me the heebie jeebies thinking what could happen. I would probably sign the petition.

Too bad people are not following the rules. If they do, those scooters are really good way of moving around in the city.

If people are being that reckless with them, then I would think they would have to go before someone gets seriously injured or killed.

I wouldn't sign a petition and I would love those things - but if people can't do what they are told then what should be done.?

I am having internet connection problem. Don't know what happened to my comment, whether it was sent or not. Over here we have bicycles for tourist to cycle and enjoy the city but I think it is not free. I hope the authorities will come up with a better solution instead of removing these scooters totally.
