Wired

The other day, the birds were landing on the wires. By the hundreds. As far as the eye can see, there was no end to them. And I began to wonder why they all faced the same way. So I researched it.

It's the wind, you see. Birds fly and land into the wind for maximum lift and control. They all face the direction they were flying when they landed, and the direction they will need to go when they take off. Which is into the wind. If the wind totally dies down, they begin to preen and hop around; then they will face different directions.

“Wind tries to show Tree how to run wild.
Tree:  “I cannot leave this place.”
Wind:  “Then let’s dance.”

Interesting fact why birds face the same direction. I must keep my eyes open in future to see whether they really face the same direction for all birds. We can't fly but we can dance.

I've never seen so many in one spot. I would think maybe 'fallout' (where they come in to roost ahead of a storm)

Wow, that's a lot of birds. Every single power line is filled with them. Interesting fact. I've often wondered why they faced the same way myself. Now I know.

I like the quote and I love to watch trees dance in the breeze or wind but not HIGH winds. I love the look and sound of trees dancing. I did not know this about the black birds. but have seen them by what looked like thousands sitting on wires or flying in the sky. one night last year we heard them coming, they make a loud racket, we stood and stared as flock after flock few over, for maybe 5 minutes. we found out later, that during that time of the season they go to an island at night to sleep, we are in the path and it is all the black birds, literally thousands of them at sundown headed to the island

LOTS and lots of birds. I guess they don't worry about getting pushed out of the way....they just find another spot. Wouldn't you love to know what they are thinking when they all line up like that?

Thanks for the education. I hope the wire doesn't break with all those birds on it at one time.

What a bunch. Blackbirds or starlings? Enjoyed your research results and the lovely quote!

I have never, ever seen that many at one time. It is a wonder the wire didn't break. Also, I have always wished I could be up level with them and take a photograph looking down the line.

I used to see wires around here like this, but guess they all flew your way.
