The Poinsettias

A local garden center had a poinsettia festival last Friday, and we went. They served homemade donuts and tea, and had thousands of poinsettias! People think the leaves are the flower, but they are just leaves. The flower is what is in the center. There are over 100 varieties! Here are the plain ones.

Here are the fancy ones, as I call them. Some are dyed or painted, and  some have glitter.

An old Mexican legend tells the story of Pepita, who had no present to give the baby Jesus at the Christmas eve services. So she picked a small handful of weeds and put them at the bottom of the nativity, feeling embarrassed. Suddenly they burst into red flowers, and ever since then they were called "Flowers of the holy night."

Wow! I didn't know there are over 100 varieties! I have only seen the bright red ones. I brought one home but it didn't last long.

Oh wow, look at all those beautiful poinsettias? So many different colors too. I shall be buying mine soon. Will you be getting another color beside the traditional red? The blue one with the other colors in the background makes a stunning header.

WOW, over 100 varieties. I had no idea. The blue ones are really pretty but when I think poinsettia I think of a red flower

they grow in the ground here, but I tried to grow them twice and they died. have only seen white and red, not the other colors.. had no idea there are so many types. maybe the ones I planted were not the ones that grow here.. the place is really beautiful decorated with all those flowers.. my niece got married the week before Christmas, her wedding was all red and white poinsettas. they had a two story tree made from potted plants.

forgot to say, her decorations cost nothing. the church had decorated for the holidays and she got to use them with only a few things for the tables.

That's a lovely legend and the show looks like it was a lot of fun. I prefer the regular red ones, but fun to see all the varieties.
