Halloween Eve 2021

We went to see our granddaughter's costumes this evening, staying outside and distancing. I did not know what the costumes were, and had to ask them what they were supposed to be!! Turned out the oldest, Anne Marie, is a Harry Potter character. And the other two are characters from Scooby Doo.

I guess the truth is that I am too old to have watched Scooby Doo or Harry Potter! But I am glad they did not wear scary costumes!

Our son Mike, who was not in a costume.

Even their dog Vivian had gotten into the spirit of things, wearing a candy corn bow.

It was hard to say good-bye.

Mister Big

Time to say Hi to an old friend, the Big Cat. I have posted him for many years. His owners dress him up for every season and occasion, and now he is ready for Fall.

A cat is an example of sophistication minus civilization.

Hay There!

With so many farms around here, neighbors often use their hay to decorate for Halloween.

The Psycho House

This is a house on our block that we lovingly refer to as "The Psycho House". Just because it looks that way.

They flaunt their scary reputation in October, making ghosts fly from every window and door.

Do you believe in ghosts? I am not denying there are supernatural forces around, but I do not think they are the spirits of dead people. Why? Because the bible tells us the dead do not come back.

The living at least know something, even if it’s only that they’re going to die. But the dead know nothing and get nothing. They’re a minus that no one remembers. Their loves, their hates, yes, even their dreams, are long gone. There’s not a trace of them left in the affairs of this earth.

Ecclesiastes 9:4-6

Clothesline Animals

Aren't these cute and imaginative? A friend posted them on Facebook today. They were created by Helga Stentzel.

The Clothes Line

by Marilyn K. Walker

A clothes line was a news forecast,
to neighbors passing by.
There were no secrets you could keep,
when clothes were hung to dry.

It also was a friendly link,
for neighbours always knew,
If company had stopped on by,
to spend a night or two.

For then you'd see the fancy sheets
and towels upon the line;
You'd see the company tablecloths,
with intricate design.

The line announced a baby's birth,
to folks who lived inside,
As brand new infant clothes,
were hung so carefully with pride.

The ages of the children,
could so readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed,
you'd know how much they'd grown.

It also told when illness struck,
as extra sheets were hung;
Then night-clothes, and a bathrobe too,
haphazardly were strung.

It said "Gone on vacation now",
when lines hung limp and bare.
It told "We're back!" when full lines sagged,
with not an inch to spare.

I really miss that way of life;
it was a friendly sign,
When neighbors knew each other best,
by what was on the line.

Bald & Bold

A few days ago, we saw our very first Bald Eagle in the wild!! I was so excited, and could hardly believe it. We watched as he flew into the large dead tree. Here is how far away he was.

Good thing my camera is a Super Zoom!

Down To The Bone

In our neighborgood, skeletons are EVERYWHERE now. You really cannot go even one block without seeing at least one. I actually kind of like my first photo. Just a couple sitting under their tree in the front yard. I imagine them as an old married couple.

This guy is also relaxing in his yard with his dog.

This guy started out buried, but has somehow dug his way out.

These two are a gruesome welcoming committee.

And this one is a pirate!

There's No Place Like Gnome

Seems some gnomes have snuck into the house and tried to hide with our fall decorations. I have spotted several lately. This one is reading atop the microwave.

This one was trying to drive off with my truck full of pumpkins, but fell out because he was too short to drive it.

This one found the truck that was more his size, and brought a sunflower to decorate it with.

The female gnome was curious about what was in these boxes.

And this is a latecomer, who is still looking for a place to settle down.

Trust not in Sprites nor the motivations of a Gnome.

Sunday Sunset

Today it is not about the sun, it's about the cloud at sunset. Posted in order.

The man who has seen the rising moon break out of the clouds at midnight has been present like an archangel at the creation of light and of the world.

Dog Paddeling

We saw two cool things today. First, a kayaking man and his dog. Looks like the dog is wearing a life vest, but the man is not. I barely had time to snap before our car ziped past them. The dog saw us, but the man did not.

And the first real bit of color I have seen all fall.

Smooth water does not make a skillful kayaker.

Terror Car

We came across this car in a parking lot. I have never seen anything like it, obviously homemade.

Let terror, then, be turned into a treat...

Night Of The Hunter

This evening the Full Hunter's moon rose, and it was huge and beautiful. We watched it rise over the mountains.

In the opposite direction, the Catholic church was sihouletted against the twilight sky.
