Cars With Skulls

We saw this car at the park.

The owner was so proud of it that he agreed to pose for me! It is a 1924 Chevy Pickup Roadster.

We also saw this car.

“When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his right, the other on his left.

A Fall Weekend With The Girls

Weekend before last, the girls spent the entire weekend with us! They got their faces painted at a fall farm festival.

We made faces on pumpkins.

Fall window clings.

Anne Marie left for a few hours Saturday evening. She was a server at a banquet for charitable purposes. Here she is in her server's uniform.

At Sunday School, they made bird feeders from ice-cream cones. We hung them in the yard and they did not last long.

“He came to serve, not be served—and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.”

A Thimble, Salt, A Candle, & A Mirror

European immigrants poured into our county in the 1800’s and the 1900’s, and brought their Halloween customs with them. For many, harvest was a last ditch effort for young maidens to find a husband. This is the strangest and funniest custom I have read.

At midnight on Halloween, the unmarried lady would walk upstairs BACKWARD. She carried a lighted candle, a thimble full of salt, and a mirror. She counted the strands of her hair as she went (with what free hands?!) At the top landing, she  swallowed the salt, and looked over her left shoulder into the mirror. If no male face stared back at her, she would not marry till next Halloween.

“After the dead are raised up, we’re past the marriage business. As it is with angels now, all our ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God.”

Airplane & Sunspot Sunday

A few days ago, we spotted a sunspot in the sky! The proper name for this is "Sun Dog", but I don't like that name. Their scientific name is Parhelion, meaning "beside the sun". They are like a tiny bit of a rainbow, though their colors are backwards from a rainbow.

And best of all, I got to see an airplane fly right through it!!

"Two mock suns rose with the sun and followed it all through the day until sunset; they are always to the side, never above or below the sun.”  ~

The Balloon Web

I saw this spider in a strange web. It's hard to see, but the web was shaped like a balloon, and hollow inside. The spider sat inside. Being terrified of spiders, I snapped these from the safety of the car.

I Googled "small white spider with a balloon shaped web", and all I got was offers to take me on a hot air balloon ride.

Q: How do spiders communicate?
A: Through the world wide web.

I then went to google Images and searched small white spiders. The spiders they showed were huge, with fangs and ten eyes. I had to stop, because I will have nightmares tonight. Do YOU know what kind of spider this is?

I found this sweet little poem, and am SURE it does not apply to spiders.

“Hurt no living thing:
Ladybird, nor butterfly,
Nor moth with dusty wing.”

The Houses Of Autumn

The first four pictures are all at ONE HOUSE!

These next pictures are of different houses in the neighborhood.

“But you can’t plead with autumn. No. The midnight wind stalked through the woods, hooted to frighten you, swept everything away for the approaching winter, whirled the leaves.”

The Hunter

Last night we watched the Full Hunter's Moon rise over the mountains. Now you can watch it, too!

“Whoever goes hunting for what is right and kind finds life itself—glorious life!”

The Dance

For the last few years, ghosts dancing in a circle have been popular for Halloween decorations. There are quite a few yards with them around here. What do YOU think about them?

“At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. They were scared out of their wits. “A ghost!” they said, crying out in terror.”

The Fly-swatter House

Driving past this house, I thought this banner looked like flyswatters. What do you think?

Upon closer inspection, I saw a skull design on one. So it is a Halloween decoration! I like it, very simple and not over done. Much better than all the spiders and vampires.

AND it makes beautiful shadows!

The fly that doesn't want to be swatted is most secure when it lights on the fly-swatter.

Wild Violets

The wild Violets are growing in yards everywhere now! They are so sweet. We have quite a few in our yard, and I hate for them to be mowed d...
