Well, what have we hiding here behind the leaves? It's a cardinal, and a very sick looking one at that. But he's not really sick, he's just molting. Molting is a process where creatures lose their skin or feathers to get new ones. A bird's feathers are really dead, kind of like our hair or nails, so they shed them every once in a while and get new. I made a robin craft with our granddaughter a few days ago, and we made him look fat and happy. Or maybe just fat and goofy. Hmmm...perhaps a few more feathers would have been in order. We will eventually shed our old bodies at some point and get wonderful new ones, ones that will never get old or hurt or get sick again!

we have cardinals that come right up to our front door to eat the seed that falls to the ground from the feeders. I suppose they are like Ruth and they are gleaning.
I've always wished we had cardinals here. They're such beautiful b birds. I can overlook the less-than-lovely spell of moulting.

Cardinals are my favs. Seeing this molting cycle was most interesting. I had a canary way back in the day that was in a constant state of molting. He was bald. Ugliest canary you could imagine seeing but he had the prettiest song.
I had no idea they did that. We rarely see cardinals this far north.
I sure will agree that he looks sick and is having a "bad hair day" :)
