Our old friends, the Helmeted Guinea Fowl are back! I hadn't seen them in over a year, and figured they had either run away from their owners or been sold. So I got a happy surprise when we passed this field today!
There were only two of them, but the rest could not be far behind.
See the cute little red flaps by their ears?
They got pretty flustered when we drove closer, flapping their wings and such. So we left them in peace.
The guinea fowl is
foremost a symbol of protection and motherhood. This is due to the fierce
courage that the guinea fowl exhibits as a guard animal, and the gentle care
with which these birds tend to their flocks.

How sweet!!
Oh Ginny!! These are amazing!!
How exciting to see them return. Wonderful photos of them.
I like there speckled feathers and did not know they are guard hens, like geese I assume. I love black and white with a hint of red and they ave that going for them.
How cute! That one picture looks like she's wearing earrings!
Fascinating information about the hens. I didn't know they were "guard" fowl either.
Love their colors.

They are so unique. I love the polka dots. ;-)
That is a unique looking bird. I'm glad you saw them again.
Glad they are back. Interesting looking birds.
Helmeted Guinea Fowl - from the Helmet like coloring on their head? They look quite fun to watch!
Certainly unique and colourful "helmet"!
Our neighbors at the farm in Southern Iowa had guienas. They had strange calls and the slept in the trees at night. I don't know what they did with them in the winter but them must have figured out how to house them inside. You have some great photos of your kind of wild guiena.
I can imagine your joy at seeing them. When we used to go to the kids house the first time they lived in Indianapolis, we would stop at this Hardees on the way. For a while, every time we stopped there was a guinea that would come running for a handout! I would have loved to know where it lived and what happened to it.
A few years ago we had a flock of them in our backyard, but they haven't been back. They are so cool!
Glad they are still there. They have nice helmet.
it must be so interesting to watch them. I've never seen one.
Lovely pictures and thanks for the information about them.
Such an extraordinary bird You captured them beautifully and I enjoyed seeing them. Thanks Ginny!
Interesting bird. I like that they are a symbol of protection and motherhood.
I thought it was a turkey at first. They do resemble the turkey, don't they?
