Highway Workers

On the very top of the foggy and windy Afton Mountain sits this memorial.

It is the VDOT workers memorial. VDOT stands for Virginia Department Of Transportation.

It is a memorial to all the state road workers who have been killed on the job. Did you know that many road workers are hit and killed on the job?

This is a popular overlook where people come to take pictures of the view. Which looks something like this.

So there is also a trash can there with the same logo. The memorial was paid for by VDOT workers & retirees, families of the dead, and businesses.

“The West has made people too time-conscious, not knowing where they are going but speeding to get there because time is short.”

I like that logo. What a nice memorial. Sad that so many road workers are killed on the job.

Sad to know that areas like this exist tho. My uncle was one, tho in Kansas (A massive piece of equipment rolled over him, crushing him)

That is a beautiful memorial and I love the logo. I am fully aware that many road workers are killed each year as it seems so many happen around here in the summer. People are too distracted when driving and really many don't care as they are too rushed to be bothered by the road workers.

this is one of the nicest and most beautiful memorials I have seen. I LOVE IT!! the 3 faces are so appealing and the last face is made from the trees behind it. great capture to show us that last face... I even love the trash can

This is a very nice memorial, and the view looks spectacular. I've seen similar memorials in other states, but none quite as nice as this one.

Wish I lived near you so I could see go all these interesting sights with you. I do not get out much here due to freeways and road construction.

Yeah, it is always dangerous to work on roads. Danger from drivers, as well as forgetting where they are and stepping into traffic. Just Always slow down in construction areas

That's really a nice memorial but for a tragic reason.
Road work is a dangerous job.

I hope the reminder helps! Here it's been mentioned a lot lately too, that drivers are very careless when it comes to slowing down where there is road-work going on, and that it's very dangerous for the workers.

I am very much aware of folks who work alongside our highways. They want to go home at the end of the day, just as I do. I love this signage.

A wonderful memorial and the simplest designs are often the most effective. Truly beautiful in so many ways. Thank you for sharing it Ginny. It brings home and very careful we all must be when we pass construction on the roads. I have often said when I see a road worker too close to fast moving traffic because of his job, how dangerous it is.

We have big signs over the expressway - lit up - that tells how many people we have lost here in GA and big fines if you speed when workers are present! It is scary to see them out there. I am glad they have a memorial to them - not sure if we do here or not.

It’s a beautiful memorial and looks peaceful there. Working on road can be very dangerous. It’s sad many people lost lives on the job.

What a beautiful site for a memorial. I worked for NYC Transit and sadly, workers were killed in accidents in the subways. Always a sad day for our Transit family.

Wow, I had no idea.
The memorial and the view are beautiful.

It is sad road workers die on the job but sadly so do tow truck drivers and even police and sometimes drivers who leave a stranded car. Seems very hazardous these days. I do think the memorial Isa kind gesture to workers. The view from it is very touching.
