This evening we saw a Pileated Woodpecker! the first one I have seen in maybe ten years. I was totally mesmerized.
He was pecking away at a tree stump, and the wood chips were flying everywhere! You can see them in some of my photos.
We were so close to him, but he was so busy pecking for insects in the wood that he never seemed to notice us.

That red is dazzling
How fun to watch him. It's always a treat to see a bird that doesn't usually visit. You got some great pictures of this one.
They are so cool - and so big! We just had one in our back area pecking at a fallen log and like you said, there were wood chips flying!
How beautiful!
I believe that is the type we have in our front yard. We named them the Mr and Mrs.
They are effective insect eaters. A wonderful creature.
Oh my goodness Ginny! GREAT shots! Fascinating bird. Their loudness while at work always amazes me! xoxo
I so enjoy seeing the woodpeckers..this one is beautiful
I'm sure he saw you, birds have keen vision and don't miss anything. He probably figured if you go to close he could peck you eye out with his big beak, so no worries.
Lovely bird. My husband said he saw this bird hanging out on our fence.
Oh, those woodpeckers are mischievous, aren't they? They are such pretty birds, but they sure can do some damage to our houses. We get the acorn woodpeckers here where a partial top of its head is red, and they are lovely as ever. I'm glad you came across the pileated woodpecker, Ginny, and that he stayed long enough for you to get some wonderful photos of him.

They are big birds. We have a couple of them I see regularly by the house.
Oh my goodness Ginny - I love woodpeckers - I just think their red is so awesome.
That's amazing!
Fantastic photos of your Pileated Woodpecker! I am back after my blog break when family were visiting. Lovely catching up :)
What an interesting looking bird.
You got some great shots of it.
