The Grapes That Weren't

Right now, the grape hyacinths are in bloom. They are totally stunning. These are just a few of the ones around town. They are called grape hyacinths because they look like tiny grapes. But look closely and see the delicate white edging on the bottom of the "grapes". In fact, they belong to the lily family and are native to Greece and Asia.



“And when you cut the grapes in your vineyard, don’t take every last grape—leave a few for the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow.”

Good name for them. Our Swedish name for them translates 'pearl' hyacinth.

What a patch of color they make. My mother use to raise some but they didn't flourish like these. Simply beautiful.
