Last year we came upon this tree. I had never seen anything like it. It was covered with thorns. I wondered what form of leaves or buds used to be on it. If any of you knows what it is, please tell me. If this is a common tree, you may think me a ninny, but it is the first and only time I have seen it in my 65 years! And of course you KNOW the bible verse that came to mind right away...
“So Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped. The soldiers,
having braided a crown from thorns,
set it on his head, threw a purple robe over him, and approached him with,
“Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they greeted him with slaps in the face.”
John 9

When I hear thorns, I think more about roses.
Greetings,
Filip
I haven't any idea.
But that reminds me of another tree with thorns close to the size of a human finger...found in Mexico and Texas. But for the life of me, I can't think of that name either.
I'm back...I had to get into my Hootin' Anni blog to check the tree I was talking about in the previous comment. The thorny tree here in south Texas is called the Silk Floss Tree...I knew I had posted about it long ago and just had to find the post.
Here is the link to show you the thorns!!

I have no idea ---but I thought of Jesus and the Crown of Thorns FIRST thing...
Where did you see the tree? I noticed that Anni gave you an answer --but it is a tree in south Texas... SO---I don't know... Maybe they are all over and nobody notices it.
Could there have been some kind of vine wrapped all around the tree (growing up the tree)????
I truly don't know.
Hugs,
Betsy
I always think of Jesus when I see thorns.
wow, no idea what this is, but would not want to try and climb it.. ha ha on that like i could climb it... it is beautiful though and great shots of it... it is a thorny day for the two of us.
When we moved here there was a small tree like that and we cut it back to the fence line and try to keep it that way.
We are in the nursery business and my husband grows hundreds of different kind of trees.....at first he thought it might be a tickle tongue but when he took a closer look at the bark, he could tell it wasn't. If it had leaves on it, he would be able to tell you in an instant. If you get a chance, then do another post when the leaves are out....
We've got some of those here, but the thorns are longer and more deadly. I don't recognize yours at all.
I've never seen such tree, either. Very unique, and obviously the tree doesn't want squirrels on it :-)
I am glad that tree doesn't grow in my yard, lol... At our age it is getting harder to cut down trees and that one would be a definite goner...
I have never seen a tree like this, either, Ginny! Thanks so much for sharing.
That Bible verse takes on new meaning when seeing a tree like that.
Have not seen this type of tree before but then again there are a lot of things that we have not seen in life. God is glorious
Oh Ginny, those thorns looks so sharp... scared to go near too.. yes, Jesus was whipped with thorns and I think they were sharper than these here..
We have a Honey Locust tree and they are thorny, but the bark on your tree looks a bit different, but it's hard to tell without seeing the trunk. My first thought when you mentioned a thorn tree was the crown of thorns they put on Jesus.
I have a Crown of Thorns houseplant but don't know if they become a tree...:)JP
i am also seeing it now only.!
I have seen plants and bushes with thorns but never a tree. Interesting! I wonder what it is??
I've never seen anything like this either. Very interesting.
Hi Ginny, what a lovely and unusual old tree. No help in identifying it I'm sorry. Thanks for stopping by my koi post. I am not sure whether I believe the koi I mentioned lived to be of such a great age, but I liked the idea of it. Have a great week :)
Not the sort of tree you'd want your horse to run through.
Wow... I've never seen one! Wonder what grows on it...
hughugs
The pear tree we used to have had thorns but not like this one. I have no idea what it is
T'is sad history...and human kind continues to make these mistakes.
I'm lost on the tree. Have no idea.
Okay, I'm going to try this again. For some reason I couldn't post earlier today.
I just wanted to say that I along with most of your comments haven't a clue either.
Looking forward to knowing the mystery answer!
So glad to be back in BlogWorld again. Thanks for commenting on my posts, Ginny.
It's a beautiful tree but definitely not for climbing. My vote is for a Honey Locus or something closely related to it.
