Chinese Lanterns

When we saw this fruit in the store, it brought back memories. When Phil was a little boy, he and his friends would find them on the ground and eat them. I had never seen such a thing before!

Their correct name is Physalis, or Ground Cherries. But people call them Chinese Lantern Plants, Aztec Berry, Bladder Berry and many other names.

They are completely enclosed in a papery husk, and can be used in the same ways a tomato can. I think they are so cute!

“Then God said, “I’ve given you every sort of seed-bearing plant on Earth And every kind of fruit-bearing tree, given them to you for food. To all animals and all birds, everything that moves and breathes, I give whatever grows out of the ground for food.” And there it was.”

Genesis 1

We grew these on our allotment one year, they grew very easily and are really nice, Ilm surprised more people do not grow them.

I have tasted this berry before and one day I found a plant growing in one of my flower pot! The local ones are smaller in size. I used to pick the wild ones and ate them when I was a kid. Good thing they are not poisonous!

They are beautiful! We use them during Obon festival in Japan. I remember they are used as part of decoration. Though, the color is different - they were more red/orange as I remember. Your photos brought back memories to me, too :-)

You certainly have pretty pictures of these. My Auntie used to make jam out of these.I must adit that I never really liked it.Later I found out that this was one of Jake's favourite jams, so I did try to make it
I wasn't very successful, probably cause I didn't like it at all.

Hello Friend,
Guess what? I grew ground cherries for the first time in our garden this season! I canned some too. I made a pie with them, it was so good.
My son Atticus can eat them like candy, he loves them.
