The Answer

Several of you were interested in what the men on the roof wearing white were doing. And today we found out! They were standing by the curb when we drove by, so we stopped and asked.

They were removing asbestos shingles from the roof! Now I wonder why the homeowners didn't just put a new roof on top of it, but I'm sure there was a good reason.

“Asbestos, EMFs, and CFCs have given us a degree of humility. When yesterday's "triumph of modern chemistry" turns out instead to be today's deadly threat to the global environment, it is legitimate to ask what else we don't know.”

I never would have thought of that. That must be a pretty old house to still have asbestos shingles on it.

I was thinking asbestos. Those shingles have lasted a very long time as I know that it has been a very long time since they were made like that.

I'm glad they are removing the asbestos. Asbestos is awful and dangerous. I have had many people come to my blog asking if they could put up their link on my side bar because they got very sick from it. It's best to remove it. Thanks for letting us know about the roof workers.

I should have thought of that, it's against federal law to sell a house with asbestos without it being removed. you can't get a mortgage. we have many houses covered in asbestos shingles, and they can't be covered they have to be removed by specialists. glad you found out, I will not have to wonder any longer. good job on stopping to find out

I didn't even realize shingles could be made of that stuff! Yikes. It is true - a lot of times I wonder if we are not killing ourselves with chemicals. But - did anyone know at the time?
