Cheesy Roads

Did you know that cheese is used to treat icy roads in Wisconsin. Green County has been using cheese brine to pre-wet roads before putting down salt treatments for about 20 years.

The brine helps salt stick to the roadway rather than bounce off. And it speeds melting. This means the county uses less salt — and saves thousands of dollars. More than 100,000 gallons of the cheese brine was used to treat roads last year. Here is a photo from the web of one of the brine trucks. The side shoot puts out the cheese brine.

Cheese brine is the leftover salt-saturated liquid used in the cheesemaking process. The best cheese for roads is Mozzarella and provolone.

A bit luxurious to use cheese to make the roads

That is fascinating and love your quotes because I love cheese! If this process saves thousands of dollars a year, other States should be looking into this.

what a great way to use the brine, the left overs. now I am wondering what they did with the brine before they started using on the roads. very interesting..

Well isn't that interesting. Quite ingenious that they have found a way to use the brine and cut down on how much salt they go through.

Interesting...I did not know this. A useful way to get rid of the brine.

Cheese brine???? Whhaaaaat? That's fascinating and I was not aware of it. In South Carolina we don't treat the roads with anything, hahaha! But then it's ultra-rare that we would have a need to. Happy week, Ginny! xoxo

That is very interesting. Now I'm wondering if that would work in our colder climate.

I like innovated ways to treat a problem. We don’t treat the snow in mountains with anything but a snow plow.
