Brown Baggin' It

On my last post I showed you some hanging balls and wreaths to provide the birds with soft nesting materials. But birds that don't have this can be very inventive when it comes to nest building. A while ago, I was waiting in the car in front of a hospital, and spotted a nest way up high in a tree. I focused with my Super Zoom and got some close up shots. Upon coming home and putting them on the computer, I was amazed at what I saw! This bird has built it's nest with a lunch bag of some sort, and used the whole little bag! Now if you'll look under the bag, there is something else, and I noticed it has writing on it. I turned the picture upside down and zoomed in as close as I could get, and here is what it says "Cough Drops". Yes, this bird has also woven a cough drop bag into it's nest! I guess that, finding nothing else, the bird used trash from the hospital grounds to make it's nest. So this is one hospital that's really for the birds!

"...like an eagle that stirs up it's nest and hovers over it's young, that spreads it's wings to catch them and caries them on it's pinions. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him."  Deut. 32:11,12

Wow, you are good! I would have never noticed the details here. Gary would... he never misses anything.
I hope you are having a great weekend, Ginny.

Oh my goodness, the little birdies are picking up trash left by messy humans and recycling it! They did a great job of weaving the bags into their nest. Great catch Ginny, I'm glad you spotted this.

Now you have learnt a way to help birds, just ball up all socks and leave them around, your birds will be very warm.

That's why God says.. if He can care for the birds, why are we worrying about ourselves.. God is great!

Very interesting that you do the same thing I do, use my zoom lens on my camera to see something like the nest in the tree. That bird was smart, just like more and more people are doing today, using what they have around before buying something new. Blessings on your day.

Ginny, I've seen wires, small chocolate wrappers, but nothing like this! Glad you zoomed into the details! Bags? Amazing!

That's amazing! Very creative bird, I would say.

I sure would have liked to have seen the bird carrying that bag back to it's nest. Amazing how creative they can be in nest building.

I did zoom in on the nest and it is an amazing work of art, sticks and paper and leaves and bags, all woven into a tight, safe home to raise babies in.
all of this for us to enjoy because someone invented digital cameras. wow. love this one ginny. tell Phil Happy Fathers day and your son too.

Faithful little recyclers, aren't they!!One person's trash is another bird's treasure! Such a great shot Ginny! Glad you noticed a bag up in a tree.

Oh my goodness, how resourceful! If only we were that clever!
Super blog and thanks for your compliments to Angel-Kitty; she's a mess!

You find the most interesting things to talk about and photograph. I'm guessing the bird is an old New Englander who was raised in the "make do, do over or do without" tradition. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Ginny. Blessings...Mary

That is really a good shot!
I was wondering what that round thing was and I would have never in a million guess it was for nesting!
Have a nice Sunday!

This is very similar to the Myna's in the wild- in that they pick up anything to build them with..only they are sloppy nest builders. Too cute--

Very nice story today Ginny - those mama birds are something - they can make a nest from a paper bag - and yet I'd have no idea how to do that.

They sort of recycle.

And God takes care of them and I know he takes care of us.

Happy Father's Day!

I always wonder if they re-use some of their nest. I had some Inca Doves nesting under our patio cover a few years in a row and they seemed to just add to the old one each year. Finally one year we cleaned it out because it was such a big mess and they never came back. I missed them!

Amazing shots, Ginny! I left a basket full of straw that I received as part of a gift basket, outside this spring and three birds made nests in my backyard using the straw! It was so nice hearing the baby birds chirping in the trees!
