But the other night, THIS flew in, I called him Mothera, after the movie of the same name with the giant monster moth. This moth was as big as a sparrow, covered with fur, and it even scared the cats!!! It was like having a bird flying in the kitchen! When it lit on a tray on the fridge, Phil stood on a chair and got this photo. From that picture, I identified it as a Hawk moth. They can hover in place or fly backwards. Fortunately, he caught it and put it out. My hero!! Have you ever had any run-ins with big flying creatures?

Scary! I don't like big bugs and moths always have kind of given me the willies.
I have seen some rather large moths before...but not one THAT large. Wow.
never heard the name before, but it is fitting and he is a little scary and congrats to big brave Phil for catching it. i love the one in the header, it looks like a Mexican skirt that is spread in a dance... do you know what it is? we don't get moths like this, lots of butterflies, but rare to find a moth.
thats a beauty, they are amazing aren't they.I have had a few run ins with flying things but moths don't scare me,
That one in your header looks as if it's made of delicate lace!!
Oh, i dont really admire them... You are amazing, Ginny..
Wow! Great photos. That's how I like to view a month--through a photograph.
Best,
Bonnie
Beautiful photos - funny I love butterflies and scared of moths. But in a way moths are butterflies - right?
We had a bat inside once - scared me to DEATH!

Oh my, we do have such a beautiful world with creatures great and small.
I am not fond of moths but I know they can be beautiful. As to flying critters encounters - Birds occasionally came down the chimney of our pre-retirement home. The cat would go crazy. As a matter of fact, I'd go crazy as well :-). Have a great day, Ginny
What an interesting moth! I haven't seen one like that before.
Hi Ginny, Many of the moths are very beautiful. I sure like that Rosetti verse. I used to teach elementary grades and occasionally a Christina Rosetti poem would be included in the curriculum we used at one of the schools where I was on faculty. Have a great Wed. tomorrow!
wow, it can fly backwards. That would be one scary moth. Never had any run ins with flying creatures
Oh no scary Mothera! As big as sparrow, that's way too scary! The moths you showed except that Mothera are very pretty indeed. Moths I'm familiar with have big black circle like eyes on their wings and I'm really scared of them.
Glad Phil got it out. Hopefully it won't come back!
These are lovely, Ginny. The colours are fantastic.
I kind of like moths too Ginny. The one in your header is so pretty. There is one moth that we see here that mimics a hummingbird and is about the same size as the little birds.
Awesomeness in bug land...:)
Wow, I have never seen one of these...all are beautiful. Just love moths.
Yow----that is one huge moth. It would scare me too... Not sure I've ever seen one THAT big.... I hope you got him safely out of your house.
Hugs,
Betsy
That would be a little shocking! Glad you got him out safely? :) Great photos!
I know this post is about Moths, but I did a double take at all those school buses in your header.Reminded me that I need to clean my bus and get it ready for next week. The moths are beautiful, even the big one.
When you are not out and about capturing images of the lovely, novel or intriguing, subjects just seem to walk or fly your way! Good capture complete with welcomed ID!
