The Main Attraction

Well, I have been to the alpaca farm several more times, it just draws me. So this would probably be my fourth post about these animals. This time the babies are half grown and they have recently been sheared. In the third picture, you can see most of the thick fur is gone, replaced by the shearing tracks. Their fleece fiber is as soft as cashmere, lightweight, warm and durable. It is much sought after and comes at a high price. Alpacas are animals of antiquity and come from the Andes over 6,000 years ago. The Incas measured their wealth by how many alpacas they owned, and considered them to be magical. A pregnant female sells for about $15,000, but that isn't why I return here again and again. I just love their bug soft eyes and gentle curiosity. This time we brought Ella, and she just loved them, they worked their magic on her as well.

"But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
or the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
or let the fish of the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?"
Job 12:7

Well I don't think I'd get tired of these posts..and kinda glad you included the background info again. I remember looking that up because we do have a ranch over here in a town called Na'alehu. I should at least pay a visit as they are really cute..what nice shots you took, and expressions. I bet Ella was just jazzed going there with you!

All God's creatures! The first time I saw your baby photos I was entrsnced, too. This year's photo series really gives a different view!

Early March (pre-stroke) hubby and I were renting skis at a shop near Sugar Mountain in North Carolina. I saw handmade ski socks from alpaca fiber, produced locally. Yes, they were divinely soft and very expensive! Loved this "update."

They really are rather unique and I can see the draw. My son in New England said that he visited an alpaca farm over the weekend. I forgot to ask if he took photos.

Best,
Bonnie

Oh they're cute. The third one looks somewhat like a poodle except the neck is too long. And I love the first one with all the hair in his face ;)

Ginny, I have never seen these in person and would love to. (plus photograph them) I do know their fleece is amazingly soft. While your post is about "softness", my post on sponges is about "hardness", lol. Sponges are animals without a brain or central nevous system. Harvesting them to not change the ecological balance of the sea as when harvested the base or roots remain intact so that it regenerates itself. That alone makes sponges unique. In the past yes, have had these sponges, they are like a loofah in feel when they dry. Natural sponges are very beneficial to the skin even for toddlers. However, natural sponges are not cheap. The last few times we have been, we have not bought any for that reason. We actually love the beauty of Tarpon Springs and the docks and authenic Greek food. We also love the people in the community. Only 1 hour from us (but lots of heavy traffic) otherwise we would go more often just to eat.

right now, I like some Alpaca wool now to keep me warm.

In my City, Auckland, we had some flurries of snow, First time in 75 years.

Re: Klaus, not, there was no mention of how he died. The blogging fraternity seems to like him a lot.

I love alpaca wool but too rich for my blood. It's so soft though one of these days I may splurge.
Love the pictures, they are adorable.

I love the 'hair' style of the first one, she could be making a fashion statement. You can show us all the alpacas you like, I will never tire of those cute little faces.

Sorry I missed you last night, my connection was down....again.

I don't know if Mike told you, but we just went to the Safari Zoo and a llama spit all over my hair & our car as we were driving through and feeding them. It was SO FUNNY! We couldn't stop laughing. Spit & all - they are still cute!!

They are so sweet looking...if I had a house with some acreage, I'd get a couple, just for fun!

My dog Gizzy reminds me of an alpaca sometimes, depending on what animal I'm in the mood for. He also can look like a teddy bear, a Koala bear and one of those imaginary characters from Starwars called Ewok....he's a riot and probably a lot cheaper than an alpaca LOL

These are incredible photos close-up of these cuties!

I also love your new post about school supplies. I always enjoyed the smell of new pencils, crayons etc. In first grade, we all used large brown pencils - not AS big as the one you are pictured with here though! Mrs. M. Lane
