A Flash Of Memory

“What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.” ~Crowfoot, 1890

I took these pictures about a year ago as a firefly made his way across my kitchen counter. The header I snapped from the newspaper.  Fireflies are not flies, and they are not bugs! Rather, they are beetles related to the ladybug. They live everywhere in the world except Antarctica, and there are about 2,000 species of them! They have really been on the decline, likely due to development and light pollution, but now they have started making a comeback!! How many of you remember catching them on balmy summer nights and putting them in a jar with grass? I can almost smell it now...the pure, fresh breath of childhood.

“Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!— came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.”
John 1

I will be having a day off the computer here on Wednesday, see you on Thursday!

Love fireflies. Who wouldn't? Even a bugophobe such as myself, makes an exception for them. And yes, I caught fireflies in a jar when I was a kid.

Aw, he is so cute. I remember catching them in jars in the summer. Since I have moved to the West Coast I have not seen a single firefly. People over here don't seem to know what they are.

I definitely remember summers spent running around the back yard catching fireflies. These days I prefer to just sit out on the back deck and enjoy their show

Oh, yes, I remember catching them and putting them in a jar, and poking holes in the lid. Where I come from, they're called lightning bugs. :-)

have not seen any fireflies for many years, none here in FL.. but i do live in town, they might have them out where it gets dark at night. right now the gnats are back and driving us nuts... we used to have a ball catching them when I was really small. no TV to watch so we played outside and caught bugs.

I remember catching fire flies and releasing them lest we inadvertently
capture Tinkerbell. Here in Oregon we do not have fireflies but we do have glow worms. Your photos are amazing.

I love fireflies! We would chase and catch them almost every single night in the summer time when I was a kid.

I am going to be off the computer here in a while and won't be back until Saturday morning!

I hope you enjoy your time off.
Happy Valentine's Day! ♥

Never saw a fire fly in the house. You got some really nice shots of them. To answer your question on your comment, I made all the pictures except the fog one. The one of the snow is my house.

We used to get a jar - put grass in the bottom - and holes in the top - and then catch them and put them in the jar. We wanted light! Have a good day off. sandie

I have those same memories. I don't see them in our yards any more. I have thrilled at the past several summers on camping trips to the Smoky Mountains when our grandkids chased fireflies, caught them, let them crawl up their arms then released them.

Oh yes, I remember catching fireflies. We always called them lightning bugs when I was a youngster.
Love the red bird in your header. I have one just like it only it's cobalt blue. It's little beak is broken off, but I still have it out anyway.
Happy Valentine's Day to you and Phil!
