Playing For Us

There are a lot of people around here who hold up signs and ask for money. On most highways you can see at least one. But this weekend was different. For the last two days, a man had set up a stand in front of Target, and was playing a horn for money. He played well, and was talented. Beside him was his wife/girlfriend. I hope he can find work.

“There are always going to be poor and needy people among you. So I command you: Always be generous, open purse and hands, give to your neighbors in trouble, your poor and hurting neighbors.
Deuteronomy 15

this is a common sight here, not the playin the horn, but people standing on corners asking for money. I noticed none of them hold up signs asking for help finding a job.. sometimes I give sometimes not. the regulars that are familiar get no help.

Panhandling is illegal here, but we still see it.

We actually give out permission slips for musical workers to get money in places like subway walkways or at certain street corners. And then we have those who are homeless and unwell who refuse shelter life. Sad to see them but they are checked on by a services crew on super hot day and super cold. Sadly our current system makes rent and services so high that jobs do not cover their needs. Do not assume they are all jobless.

I have to say I love this kind of asking - sometimes people get in need - it is better than robbing - asking for money - food stamps - he is trying to give something back. I would give him some - but I usually give anyone asking for money a $1 - it is not much - but if everyone did i would be good! sandie

I am very torn about giving money to those on street corners.
Perhaps I am too judgemental.
Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area we saw so much and a lot were mentally unfit for much else...
But
That bible verse always stops me cold..
Who am I to say what their real situation is?
Such a dilemma ....
to answer your question Ginny...Hubby had surgery to remove his half dead, infected gall bladder.
Complications have not made it a" piece of cake" surgery like mine was.
Today there is improvement and I am grateful he is home and we are in this together!
Prayers for complete healing most appreciated.

My first though here was if that's his wife/girlfriend with him then where are the two children he has. There is a college town not far from here and you see a lot of people standing with signs asking for money.

I had the same thought as Ann...where are the kids? Also have the same thought as the other in who am I to judge. I know where my daughter worked, they used to 'wait', some of her friends would offer to take them and buy them meals and they wanted money. She had gotten her hair cut one time, and one of them told her he liked her haircut!

Musicians on sidewalks and street corners with their instrument case or other container set out to take donations are common in New Orleans' French Quarter but haven't seen it in our small town. Homeless are common, though.

Panhandlers are on many of the medians, all ages. I worry about their safety. Some are on very busy roads and cars go by fast. Once I saw a family near our supermarket, the man was playing a horn and he was excellent. People were dropping money into his box and I think he did quite well.
