The Painting

This large painting hangs in the art building of a collage, over a staircase. It has been there for many years. And it bugs me, because I cannot understand it! What does it mean? Why is the lamb in a chair, and a faceless man is behind him? Any thoughts?

“He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know. He died like an unblemished, sacrificial “. And this was no afterthought. Even though it has only lately—at the end of the ages—become public knowledge, God always knew he was going to do this for you. It’s because of this sacrificed Messiah, whom God then raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust God, that you know you have a future in God.”
1 Peter 1

intriguing piece. I, too, have questions about the meaning of some of the art that is so abundant in our town. It is home to so many prolific artists. Even many of the scientists i worked with before i retired were also gifted artists.

Goodness I wish I knew. Like LC said, it is intriguing. I would like to talk to the artist and hear what he is trying to tell us. In my world/head the lamb would be a member of the family and entitled to sit on the chairs.

Hmm, I don't know. The back legs of the chair are something I would wonder about too. It would have been nice if there had been some information about it, and what the artist was trying to portray. It is intriguing, and even though I have no clue, I really like it.

I am wondering too. I suppose the one who painted it has the answer.

I can't figure out the meaning, like many pieces of art. But, I do know I like it. The subtle colors... the mysterious human form behind. Maybe it could be representing someone that has left this world, but still guiding his 'children'. I can't see a title or artist signature.

Not a clue what it might mean but I like Annis thoughts on it. It would be nice to know what the artist had in mind as he was painting this

it is weird! maybe it has no meaning, most of art has no meaning to me. when I look at things I either like it or don't like it... I don't care for this one and would not hang it in my home... I do like the chair. odd, very odd.. I don't see a signature, maybe a student did it

I guess art is supposed to be appreciated -- not understood.

I had to go back and look at the legs of the chair. Weird...Wouldn't hold anyone comfortably in "The Real World".
I don't understand it either and wonder what that thing that looks like an elephant's trunk or some sort of tubing behind the chair is... An unfinished dream??

The lamb with short legs looks happy to be high up on the chair. But I have no idea what this painting means. Now it's bugging me :-)

I have studied extensively on the shepherd and his lambs this past year. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Each one is loved and treated royally by the real shepherd - he guards them with his life. They didn't have gates so the shepherd laid across the opening to prevent them from leaving. He knew which ones were there and which ones were missing. What each one needed. I have no idea what the picture meant for real, but to me - it is Jesus - taking very good care of me - the sheep. He is looking on...Who knows tho. lol

It does raise many questions in the mind.

I have no idea what it means, but it is interesting.

Hmm, that is very interesting and open for many interpretations, a lamb can be a symbol of many things. We should know more abouut the artist and his backgroubd to build a decent interpretation, but a faceless man usually means an everyman - a symbol or representant of all of us. Definitely something to think about☺

I don't think it is a very successful work if it leaves one with too many questions.
