Always Watching

We happened to drive by these Canada Geese at a local pond, so I snapped a photo. They are eating, but do you notice something? One goose has his head up while the others eat. The goose with his head up is the lookout, or sentinel goose. When the flock eats, there is always one who watches for danger. They are extremly wary, and even with the watcher on guard, they will all lift their heads every so often and look around. They know it's not good for any one goose to keep his head down all the time. Smart geese.

"I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning."

Psalm 130:5,6

The geese are so smart, I have noticed them doing the same thing at our local parks.

I never realized that before - thanks for sharing! I'll have to watch for that from now on...

they are wary and MEAN and loud. i have been chased a few times by LOUD geese. were they making noise? the geese that live at our Local ASPCA in a pond are very vocal when I take there photos, they honk and yell at me but they are fun. i like this photo a lot.they are used for guards dogs on farms, no one can sneak up on you with a yard full of geese. of course they are not Canada geese but domestic ones.

I love the way all of Nature was created by a very kind Creator who thought of everything that they would need. The defense mechanisms they are given are incredible. Love the photo. I'm sure you already know, but if not check out why geese fly in a V formation. :)

I would hate to be on the wrong side of a guard goose. Big and cranky!

The geese look so benign but here we chase them away from the grassy areas in parks. They do a lot of damage as well as make the area unpleasant with their waste. Just another side to nature.

I love your informative postings. I did not realize that about Canada geese. You're right, God has done some amazing things with all creatures, great and small.

Best,
Bonnie

Ginny this is beautiful..I love the soft pastel shade here. For some reason I zeroed in on him because he also looks pretty with the the other one in front! Nice verses to go with too!
We used to have geese and they were so loud!! I know this sounds terrible but because they were under our old house- you could never tell when they'd go off (lightening struck our female)? Sooo, my husband and son would run out there and catch him then put duck tape on his beak for the night!! (lol) Don't worry..never hurt him at all!!

Well, aren't they clever then?! I think I would be *that* goose. I am always on the lookout for danger or hazards. :o) Thanks for telling me about this post; great photo! I love geese. :o)
