Here is what the green balls look like inside, like grass balls.
Inside the grassy looking balls, there are big black balls.
And it is here that we start to hammer!
And we have walnuts!! Real ones. Nature protects them with many different and hard layers.
And so we come to the end of our mystery!

great series of shots today to show the walnut
I've never seen a walnut growing on a tree, I thought they were sweet chestnuts when I first saw them. Lucky you.

Oh my, you know I almost said nuts yesterday but then I thought no can't be. I thought they looked like something I saw when I was a child on a walk through the woods with my father. He had picked some up to show them to me
I would never have guessed walnuts in a million years.. but then i have never seen one except in the store.. it is amazing all the layers it has to protect it.. so glad you shared this with us... add this to my list of things i have learned from blog land... and the photos are super shots, all of them..
I would never have guessed one of the superfoods, walnuts! Fascinating, thanks Ginny. It was fun to find this out. Thank you and those photos were great :)
That is so interesting! We used to have butternuts and you needed a maul to get them open! Love your walnut shots! :-)
I didn't know they looked like that in side, I wonder if any thing eats them but people. Very interesting.
Awesome series, Lynn!
Walnuts are one of my favorite nuts. Love your saying about families.
WOW! I loved your pics....and how you always take us on a cool journey!
Blessings, Joanne
I enjoyed this series, Ginny! I have always found black walnuts difficult to open but I see you got inside just fine!
Who new....I have never seen a walnut except in a store.... strange and cool at the same time. Thanks for sharing. :)
a wonderful message!
Oh how I hated the black walnuts we had in VA!!!!...:)JP
I enjoyed your mystery very much, especially this post where you show all the work necessary to get to the walnut meat.
One thing far sure, you never get too hold to learn. How interesting to learn so much about a walnut. You are so good at keeping us in suspense with your finds.
Great message today!!
hugs
for a moment there, i thought those are "rambutan". We have fruit called Rambutan over here. when we peel off the skin, there is a sweet flesh in it.
We used to gather walnuts and hickory nuts when I was a kid. Like the shots with them on the trees below, too.
Walnuts are yummy!
Greetings...
We always gathered walnuts when we were kids. I can remember at Christmas mom would have us crack them for her to use in cakes and candy.
Ginny, when I saw the green balls in your post below I knew they were walnuts. Our neighbor has a walnut tree in his yard near the property line. The squirrels get them and bury them in our yard. The grassy balls look like the outer covering of the chestnuts from our tree. The squirrels like those too once the covering comes off.
Reminds me of walks in the woods on relatives' rural property that was where my father grew up.
After a large gathering for a fall meal with extended family, my father would take all us youngsters out into the woods to explore. Always included was a visit to the walnut tree to collect the nuts. Your photos document what we would do, with the help of my father and his brothers, when we returned with our bounty.
