Looks to me like someone was on the rooftop (or in a tree) above the car with a suction-cup dart...semi-automatic assault weapon, target practicing with the darts. Pretty good aim, too, if you ask me.

Pierce did actually get disoriented in The Channels and ended up on top of it somehow. It kind of freaked him out a little, which is why he ended up going up to the summit with Paul to mess around with ham radio. The rest of us didn't have trouble - all the rocks look a little different, so it wasn't so hard.
