The Dollar Store Dilemma

These photos are of our Dollar General just a few blocks away. It is a really nice store. BUT...

Did you know that since 2014, there have been 49 people killed and 172 people injured at Dollar General stores.

Dollar Stores are a prime target of armed robberies because they sometimes have only a single worker manning the register, and they lack security.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited unsafe conditions at dozens of Dollar General stores in recent years. Stores are open for business with rodent infestations, rotting food, exposed electrical wires and broken toilets, according to an NBC News review of health inspection reports and interviews with more than a dozen current and former Dollar General workers.

Looking at both Dollar Tree and Dollar General over the course of five years, inspectors found boxes stacked dangerously and blocking exits, water leaking through the ceiling and causing wet floors covered in ceiling tiles, and boxes blocking fire extinguishers and electrical panels.

All of ours always have tall stacks of boxes everywhere. They just do not hire enough staff to unpack them in a timely manner. Considering how much money they have been making, this should not be the case. Often, one employee has to do everything. But I will still be shopping at ours, just being very careful.

That's too bad, I feel for the employees! Please do be careful! ❤️

Sounds pretty cheap set up by the owners of the stores. That is a horror for the staff working in there

That's kind of a shame. I didn't realize all this. The stores near here are kept pretty good. There was one in the next town over that was closed because of issues with the roof and I heard they had a bee infestation.
I worked at the local DG years ago and during the day they usually had 3 or 4 people working but in the evenings it was just 2 of us.

the one I shop is old, they did a remodel last year and now its good but there is only one person working and he has to do everything. the man that was there for years is gone, his back could not handle it any more. they even have to unload the trucks, they do bring in someone to work while the truck is unloaded. in the past they had 3 people all day. they went to one when reopened after 2020.. ours has not been robbed but they had to close the new self serv check out due to high volume of shoplifting

I used to like the Dollar Tree store in our town. Dollar General, not so much, but it seemed clean and had enough staff. I didn't know about the robberies and I feel really bad for their workers.

Are you talking about the Dollar Trees too? I don't go to Dollar General all that much - that is terrible. Be careful!

You all have a very nice Dollar General. Goodness...I had no idea that there was this much negative activity around these stores. I rarely shop at our local Dollar store for the simple reason that it is located in a dangerous spot, as it is on the main highway, in a very busy area. No Red light, and there are so many wrecks from people trying to pull out.

We have a DG in our town but it's such a disaster that I don't know how it stays in business. It's a mess and sometimes people can't even find a staff member. I don't even go there anymore.

We no longer shop at DG. The ones in our area are a mess. There are boxes all over the floor, they are dirty and seem dark to me.

I guess ours is an exception. We shop there lots and never had any problems. They could use a little more help though.

I'll still be shopping there too, Ginny. As you know, we have one up here, and it's pretty safe and always clean and tidy. I'm looking forward to browsing through their Fall stuff soon. They have cute holiday items too.
Thanks for the info.

That’s a terrible way to run a business and it is putting their staff and their customers at risk. I think you are wise to be extra careful while in their store.

What a terrifying statistic! Our DGs are just as you described. There is a really, really nice Dollar Tree over by Erica's house and whenever I can, I go there. I love their deals on greeting cards and batteries! DG, I can live without. xoxo

Sunday Sunset

I snapped these from the Target parking lot. The sun had just gone down, but the trees were hiding the very bottom part of the sunset. Life...
