We are in the middle of a heatwave here. The next two days are supposed to be about 100 degrees. Even the birds are suffering! They are so hot that they are having to breathe with their beaks open! Here is the Great Blue Heron. He was also vibrating his chin pouch to cool off as well.
Uh-Oh, busted!
On to our next hot bird, the Belted Kingfisher. His feathers are all wet and slicked back from diving for fish. Nevertheless, he is still hot enough to need open beaked breathing.
"It's so hot that the birds are picking up worms with
potholders."

Lol on the birds' use of pot holders. Yep, that's hot!!!
Yikes, that is hot. You might want to keep a close eye on your potholders so the birds don't snitch them to pick up their worms...lol
we had a few minutes of 102 yesterday which we have NEVER seen on our back yard thermometer. high 90's we see for 3 months out of the year. I have never noticed our birds doing the breathing thing, but then I am not out in the mid day heat, we always saw them early am. makes sense. i watched and ibis eating in the front yard yesterday and he had no potholders. LOL
Cooked worms for dinner - lol. So we are having a heat wave too. I don't understand why you have Blue Herons - aren't they beach birds? SO pretty tho.
Yes, it's been hot out there. Hopefully our rain is headed your way, Ginny, along with the cool down. As I type it's past 11am and still not 70*F yet, here in northern-most Indiana. Hopefully our weather is headed your way. ~Andrea xoxo
Suppose to be 102F again today...getting really tired of it and the AC rumbling on and on, day after day...
Love the photos and I haven't seen any birds with potholders lately either..haha

I feel sorry for the wildlife that has no place to go cool down. At least we have air-conditioned homes to retreat to.
That is HOT. I think if I was the heron I would STAND in the water. :)
Same here...
Poor birds...
But, it is summer.
Just happy for A/C.
Will be happy when we don't have to use it, again, though.

That is too hot! I love seeing the birds, they are majestic.
Fingers crossed it cools off soon. ❤️
Oh poor critters. It's been hot here, too. heat index over 100 this week. I just stay inside.
I laughed at your quote and great catches on the birds. Using nature's air conditioning :)
And your heat is humid too, isn't it? Poor birds and all critters including us humans. Sadly this will only get worse in years to come.
Yep we are roasting here too! I love summer but more and more I am enjoying it from indoors! xoxo
