The Hobbit House

My photos today are from our local T.V. news. I snapped while they ran this story about a Hobbit house in River Falls, Wisconsin.

It was built in 1970 by two energy efficient professors. The inside walls are spray painted foam insulation.

2 bedrooms, two baths. It sits on 3 1/2 acres and costs $315,000.

I think the outside of the house is where the Hobbit similarity ends. I have always thoght of Hobbit houses as being so COZY. And this is certainly not! It is so stark, and not pretty to me at all. In just a few weeks, it was looked at on Zillow 65, 000 times. And people are even coming from out of state wanting to buy it.

And here he was, a little halfling from the Shire, a simple hobbit of the quiet countryside, expected to find a way where the great ones could not go, or dared not go. It was an evil fate.

I imagine it is very energy-efficient tho.

I can see where the uniqueness of it would attract a lot of attention. I don't find the inside at all appealing though. I can't imagine coming from another state just to make an offer on this.

Oh man, that foam insulation was *not* intended to be exposed like that. It was intended to be covered with something like drywall, paneling or *something*. I think breathing that over time will be cancer-causing to their lungs. UGH! Maybe the spray painting sealed it a little bit, I don't know. And over $300K for THAT?! Oh my! *haha* To each their own. Thank you for showing this to us, Ginny. ~Andrea xoxo

I won't be moving from Green Bay to River Falls anytime soon. Not my cup of tea...but fun to look at. I think of the Hobbit's place as been warm and cozy, too. xo Diana

Definitely not in my taste but I can see the attraction because it's so different!

no idea what a hobbit is, but this home is not only stark and not to my taste, but i would smother just thinking i was sleeping underground, my what iffer is already in gear, like
what if there was a lands slide
what if there was an earthquake
what if a serial killer came in the one door I see

This is so not my cup of tea...I'm sure the builders had to go through much testing before approval. I need windows and views of the outside.
I am not a mole...haha

I agree with you about the similarity being on the outside only. If at all...

I can see why they call it a hobbit house because it's underground. I give them credit for trying to be energy efficient but I wouldn't like to live there. I would especially worry about the foam insulation over time.

Well whoever they are, they can have it! I have to be able to hang pictures on the wall, haaahaa. So that's a hard pass from me. xoxo

I think it is kind of cool but I wouldn't want to live in it. I like having lots of windows to look out of.

I have seen these places as BnB's. I would enjoy living in one of these for a few weeks. Thanks for sharing the photos, very interesting and I enjoyed the Tolkien quote.

I immediately thought about how safe it would be to live there...with all that foam insulation.
