Sunday Sunset - The Race Goes To The Swift

This evening we watched the pink and yellow sky as a backdrop for the Chimney Swifts flying around grabbing insects from the air.

Chimney Swift Facts

·       The family name, Apodidae, means "footless" in Greek. While Chimney do in fact have feet, they're useful only for clinging to vertical surfaces. They are unable to perch.

·       These birds eat, drink, mate, and even sleep on the wing.

·       Chimney Swifts are one of the few bird species known to use echolocation, like bats do. They emit high-pitched calls that bounce off objects, helping them navigate.

These are great pictures of the "golden hour" of the evening. We have a lot of chimney swifts around here. I enjoy watching them as they maneuver through the evening sky. They seem to be great Ariel acrobats as well.
