Looking & Not Looking

Sorrow makes us all children again — destroys all differences of intellect. The wisest know nothing. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes when I am out, I find myself walking behind someone who looks like a person I loved who died. And I don’t want to pass that person; I don’t want to see their face. It would break the illusion that just for a while, I am walking with them again. It is then that I remember First Corinthians 15:

“But let me tell you something wonderful, a mystery I’ll probably never fully understand. We’re not all going to die—but we are all going to be changed. You hear a blast to end all blasts from a trumpet, and in the time that you look up and blink your eyes—it’s over. On signal from that trumpet from heaven, the dead will be up and out of their graves, beyond the reach of death, never to die again. At the same moment and in the same way, we’ll all be changed. In the resurrection scheme of things, this has to happen: everything perishable taken off the shelves and replaced by the imperishable, this mortal replaced by the immortal. Then the saying will come true:
Death swallowed by triumphant Life!
Who got the last word, oh, Death?
Oh, Death, who’s afraid of you now?”

I hope you have a peaceful and safe Memorial day, and remember 1 Corinthians 15

A sunset for us here is a sunrise for those who have left us behind. Death - where is your sting? So precious these verses! Christ conquered!

Beautiful post, Ginny. I had a good friend who was dying. I remember clearly one specific thing he said to me (and this was many years ago). He said: "I'm not one bit afraid of dying. What I'm afraid of is living with the pain." Death is our ultimate FREEDOM...

God Bless.
Hugs,
Betsy

I have the deja vu experience often with my parents, especially my mother. For a moment she is there but then the lady turns around. Like you, for a few moments, I just want to enjoy it.

I do that too sometimes. 'see' someone on the street I know to be dead. Takes a millisecond to get it straight in my head, but still. Thanks for this post... Today is Mother's Day here and also the date is 4 years since the death of my mother.

Ginny...what a great, AWESOME post!! There are so many times, that I have been out and about and see someone that left me behind. It's eerie, yet so heart warming to stir up all the good memories. Bitter sweet in a way.

I truly, truly think this is absolutely the BEST post you've ever done. At least the best I've read.
