The Ginkos

Just a few weeks ago, the Ginko trees were changing color. I like to post them every year. They are living fossils, having survived the Jurrasic period and existing unchanged for 270 million years.

This is a fossil of a ginko leaf, from millions of years ago.

They can grow for thousands of years. There is one in China that is 3,500 years old.

Four Ginkos survived the Hiroshima bombing. They were charred, but still live today.

You can tell them by their fan shaped leaves. Ginkos have no relatives, they are one of a kind.

We can learn a lot from trees: they're always grounded but never stop reaching heavenward.

There are many of these growing in Columbia ... my daughter Erica was exclaiming about their beauty to me just the other day. She saved a leaf, she was so taken with its shape and color. I believe in the Genesis account of a young earth, but no matter how old these are, they are among the most lovely of God's creation. Your pictures are wonderful! xoxo
