Let Them Eat Cake

In yesterday's post, I promised you my wedding cake story, so here it is. I have mentioned before that we are Mennonites, and my old church where I got married was extremly conservative. As you can see, all the women wore head coverings. Not just in church, but all the time. The Amish come from the Mennonites. If you want to learn a bit more, you can click HERE. The picture of me looking in the mirror, see the long sleeves of my wedding dress? Those sleeves had been sheer see-through chiffon. But upper arms had to be completely covered, so my mom had to line the sleeves. Anyway, you get the idea of how very plain and conservative this church was. Well, by some horrible mishap, the wedding cake was soaked in RUM! Yes, not only was it ugly, but sinful as well. I was prepared for big trouble, at the very least a stern talk from the pastor. But here's the funny part. I soon realized that none of these people had ever tasted rum or any other kind of spirits, so they had no idea what this strange new flavor WAS! There were remarks that it was certainly unusual, they couldn't quite put their finger on it. But they kept coming back for more and having a better time the more they ate! Yes, that night they were spirit filled in more than one way.

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for eveything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:18

Oh how funny! They couldn't figure out the strange new flavor and kept coming back for more. Did you ever find out how the rum got in the cake?

How funny. Cute photos. I have so much respect for the Amish and Mennonite people. I go to Lancaster County as many times as I can talk my daughter into it when I go back to DC. I could stay there my entire life.

I love the wedding photos! The story of the rum infused cake is so funny. All's well that ends well. I'll bet they talked about your deliciously different wedding cake for years!

Laughing out loud at this one. i come from old hardshell baptist stock and know very well about the strict laws. this is really funny and i have never heard of a wedding cake being soaked in rum. was it an accident? do you know how it happened? was it poured on? or in the icing?

Hmmm... But you knew about it??? Makes me wonder when and how you found out yourself! ;)

I'm actually not sure I know even now exactly what rum tastes like.

Ginny, first of all you were a lovely bride. And second, that's one of the funniest wedding stories I've heard. You've given me my chuckle for the day, and I needed a laugh because today we are expecting a huge blizzard. I, too, have great respect for the Amish and Mennonite people, to be able to maintain their beliefs and values in a world where such things are often ignored and criticized is admirable.

That's a wonderful story. Never occurred to me that folks who don't drink wouldn't know the flavor for what it was.
And a nice story about the sleeves...two for one here. Good post.

Oh Ginny - you're not going to believe what I'm going to tell you.

My daughter Kelly - the same thing happened - we never even ordered rum flavoring!

It was aweful to us - now some of the men - including the minister - who didn't know either - loved the cake.

I went back to the bakery on Monday - with a sample - to get my money back - and I got it back!

Now that's so funny!!!!!!!!!!

LOL> Great wedding memory!! And I love the pictures!! What a beautiful bride. I admire the Amish as well as the Mennonite faith... for many reasons. When I see someone in modest dress as w/ Amish or Mennonite... I can be sure of one thing... they will be kind. In today's world, that means a lot. Thanks for sharing this funny story!

That is one of the funniest wedding stories I've ever heard! I've heard of soaking fruit cake in liquor but never a wedding cake.

Neal said...

LOL. Did you soak the cake and play innocent? :)

Fred Alton said...

Ginny, I would laugh out loud - but I know it's against the rules! Our church too, is "total abstinece from all liquor or strong drink"! Someone forgot to tell us that many cough meds have more alcohol content than a bottle of wine. And I can remember when many of our members gave testimonials of how great it was to have Hadacol!!!

Yup, let them eat cake! That was too funny Ginny! What great wedding photos - such a beautiful bride. The cake looks lovely! Hubby and I never got used to the taste of traditional fruitcake - with or without the rum. That's why we surprised everyone by not having a cake at all! And our marriage is still doing great, LOL!
