If You Get Too Close To The Fire

...you'll get burned. That's right, if you get too close to the fire, you'll get burned. But it seems that SOME of us don't take this as seriously as others. Phil has extremely low blood pressure and is always cold. Even at 90 degrees, his feet are still cold. So whenever he sees a fireplace, he goes to it like a moth to a flame. Fireplaces draw him like a magnet, and he backs right into them. And this Christmas season, we were at lots of friends houses with fireplaces. I have warned him that he stands too close, but to no avail. And it finally happened, he backed into a fireplace and got too close. And how do I put this delicately? Well, I'll just come right out and say it. He burned his butt!! I was not with him at the time, but he came home chagrined, showing me his fried coat. Fortunately, he was not hurt, his coat took most of the the damage. His best coat. I guess I can't be too hard on him, I'm the same in my own way. I have burns most of the time from being careless in the kitchen. Witness my arm here just a few days after his little incident. Hopefully we are not a danger to anyone but ourselves! Here's one fire that we need to stand as close to as possible, and it's light and heat will never hurt us.

"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverance and awe. For our God is a consuming fire."
Hebrews 12:28

Our girls laugh that there are many things "they just don't want to know" about the funny oops of our daily lives.

gosh..that is close, Ginny.. if his coat can get on fire, it means he must be standing pretty close.. yes, do remind :)
As for your arm burn, do apply some aloe vera ointment if you have, it takes off the scar.. :)

Goodness, that is close if Phil's jacket is scorched. And your arm, you need to grow an aloe plant to have handy for such things.

Phil's blood pressure is probably not the problem, I have low blood pressure and I'm the one who likes open windows and low settings on the furnace. Hubby has high blood pressure and he's always cold, just like Phil.

For some reason this makes me think of Little Women by Louisa Alcott. There is some incident there too of standing to close to a fireplace. I think it stuck in my mind because the first time I read about it I had difficulties quite understanding the references; this partly to do with translation and partly with lack of experience - never having had to warm myself in front an open fireplace like that!

My daughter is the same way. She sits on the radiator! She's always cold.

I agree with SquirrelQueen; an aloe plant handy would sure come in handy for these dreadful burns. Hope you two have a nice weekend.

Well the positive thing is that losing his favorites coat might make him believe that id needs to stay away from fire...
Good that Phil is alright though.
Have a lovely weekend:-)

That's scary. Good that the damage wasn't much! The picture of your hand reminds me of how accident prone I am too. No wonder I had a good laugh reading your post about your angel who watches you as you cut and burn...;))

This is for Phil: Phil, I'm sorry that I laughed at your "meeting with the fireplace". In fact, I laughed kind of a lot. After all, I knew you were o.k. and Ginny's humor came through and....well, I laughed. Sorry about your coat.

This is for Ginny: Stay out of the kitchen!!

Best,
Bonnie

i have not had a burn in years, but a few weeks ago, for some reason, getting toast out of the toaster oven, i had one about an inch long on the top of my hand. i am glad the coat was not one that went up in flames and was fire retardant. YIKES CL moment is hittig me, if I were not holding the lap top in my lap i would be running in circles clucking. so glad he is not hurt. you can buy another coat but not another Phil.

Burns are one of the most painful of all injuries - no matter where you get it.

Hope you and hubby stay safe.

You know Ginny, when seniors in our senior's home (independent apartments) start burning themselves like that, we get really freaked out and start 'the talk' with their family, LOL! So thankful that Phil's coat didn't just catch fire like some fabrics do!

You take care!!

Poor Phil! He must have hated to tell you-ha! You know of course, that we can never truly domesticate men-ha! Glad he was not hurt. Hugs

I'm glad he wasn't hurt. It's best not to share the story with your children :-). I hope you both have a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary

I agree the feet being always cold. Even in 90 degrees lol, mine too. I did not know it is low blood pressure, but I have low BP

I will try to stay far enough away from the fire!

I'm glad you're both going to be ok - eventually - I'm somewhat accident prone in the kitchen too... my specialty is burning myself on the oven rack or cutting myself with the knife in the kitchen sink whilst washing the dishes...and sewing. I always poke myself with the needle which is why I avoid sewing as much as possible...life's dangerous and sometimes you just have to listen to mom ;-)

Just got your comment about your new Whole Foods. It's a date! I'll see that you get a map of the store so you won't get lost. = ) Sorry, just couldn't help myself.

Best,
Bonnie

My wife's dad, when he was alive, would be wearing longjohns when I was still running around in a short sleeve shirt and shorts.

I'm sorry about that..hmm, I run on pretty low BP too! I can understand and sympathize! My feet get cold in Hawaii at times..ya even here gets chilly- but that's a dandy place to catch the heat! Aloe vera soothes the burn, I'm sure you figured something out by now! Funny how God is that..yet we like to be so near Him at the same time! Hope Phil gets a new coat:)

HAHAH, I burst out laughing, but only becuase Phil was not hurt...just like a little kid; they don't listen, do they?
Thanks for the chuckle today...much needed!

Thank you for your nice comment. You must have touched a cord, I am a little weepy after I read your message. Thank you for the kind words. I am 53 and up for the job!! and today for some reason I can't find the car seat I guess I'm not suppose to go anywhere! LOL
It can get overwhelming but it seems like you do a great job too!
I love it when the kids are talking, your right about writing things down!
Thanks Ginny....
I'm glad you honey is OK. It is pretty funny though..I get too close too because I love the heat!

I scorched my winter coat as a child standing too close to a wood stove ... glad all is as well as can be with a burn.

Ooops! Sorry, Ginny, for Phil's jacket! It's not that he got too close...it's just that the materials in the coat were not made to withstand the heat. I have a favorite sleeveless vest that I wear regularly because it's so warm, so I know it would burn quickly if I stood too close to the fire. It's a fake goose down, covered with nylon. BTW my e-mail is fbrannen2001@yahoo.com. We live in Cleveland, TN - through which US 11 passes enroute from New York to New Orleans. I've hitch-hiked much of the route from Knoxville, TN to New Orleans, and have driven it all the way to New York!

Beautiful fires can be so dangerous! I like to back up close to a fireplace, too, so I need to be careful. Ginny, I have burns on my arm, too, right now.

I'm really behind reading blogs; I've had flu this week, but I'm feeling better now and will try to catch up. Hope you've had a good first week of 2011!

I hate to tell you, but I am just like Phil. I freeze if I am not sitting right in front of a fireplace.I have not burned myself too badly, but my back sure has a lot red spots.

My mom is the same way... she is always cold... though her blood pressure isn't low at all. They run the fireplace and even with the fans circulating it gets hot upstairs. I don't think my heat runs at all in winter.

I can't even laugh at him since I've done something similar only my incident was with a stove I was standing in front of. I've also got a couple burns that look like yours. I frequently burn myself at work.

Well---I knew that that last picture wasn't Phil's BUTT---but I wondered what it was (until I read your post)... ha ha ha ha

So sorry that he burned his coat...Glad that he didn't do any real damage to his back-end....Yipes!!!!

I just had to laugh when I saw your burn, Ginny. Sorry :-( It reminded me of a honeymoon incident with Don. LOL I had just finished ironing something in our hotel room (on Catalina Island) and he was being frisky as only a new groom can be. Anyhoooo - I had set the iron aside on the nightstand and forgot to turn it off and he backed into it with his arm. Oh! what a burn he got and I'll never forget the yelp he let out. The burn looked must like your kitchen burn (I get plenty of those too).

I'm glad Phil's jacket did not catcgh fire! That is so dangerous.

I burn my arm like you do Ginny when I am cooking a lot in the oven and checking and moving everything around. It's a cook's hazard!

It wasn't the hole in my pants, but the sheep shit which were all over the place.

Hi Ginny,
We didn't spend our holidays going away for over-night stays. Rather, we went on day trips and came back at night. There are lots of places in Auckland we could go hiking.
Yes, going up was easier.
The sheep were tame, they didn't move away until you were about 6 feet away. Sheep are quite docile. There are signs telling people not to chase them.

Poor Phil,

You keep some aloe vera gel, it is very good.

In one house we lived, there was a fire place, my husband didn't like it, he said it sucked in more cold draft than the heat we were getting. Also he didn't like the burn smell. So much for having a romantic fire place.

I have another not so nice story about a fireplace. Haven't told anyone yet. Now it the right time to tell. You are the first.

We went to a villa with a small group of friends. The owner knew our friend and offered to her free of charge. otherwise it was used as a wedding venue and other small camps.

When we arrived, a medium sized bird was trapped inside, and knocked down some stem wine glasses. We saw a bird dead on the floor. While some girls went EEEK!, I quickly got some newspaper and wrapped it up and threw it far into the bush.

Through out the night, the other smell of bad odor, I didn't because I have a "Broken nose."

Anyway, the next morning, the friend said she was leaving, because of the smell. we searched the whole place for some dead animal, we didn't find any. A young man came to the fireplace and he said the smell came from there. We lined the floor with newspaper, and I covered my hand in plastic bag.

Now I won't get too graphic. Unless you want to know. Aunty Ann became the hero. It was a funny story.

No wonder, there were so many cans of air freshener. No body went into the root of the problem.
