Only Sleeping

Please don't wake me, no don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping

Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

The Beatles- From "I'm Only Sleeping" & "Golden Slumbers"

I find that one of the greatest pleasures of having very small children around is when they sleep on me. It is an almost spiritual experience, and I don't really know why. I love the soft sounds and the smell of the hair. Being touched with youth and pure innocence, perhaps I can soak it up and some will transfer.  I have had arms and legs go to sleep, ache, and feel like they would fall off, still I would not move them. Have you experienced this? I enjoy enticing tired little ones to my lap with soft lullabies. It seems like an almost magical experience to me, but after all, they're only sleeping. See you on Tuesday!

'My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep."
Psalm 121:2,4

Love this post! I used to pick my babies up from their cribs and sit holding them while they slept. Now I need to slumber. We just got back from seeing "Guys and Dolls" and it was great but it is late--hmmm, where was I going with this? Oh, yes--to bed.

Best,
Bonnie

It's the innocence, Ginny. Their clean, unblemished sweetness fills the air, especially when they sleep.

these photos of Ella Bella sleeping with you are Phil are total magic, for some reason as i scrolled through each photo after staring at her sweet face in the header, my eyes started to tear up. she is so sweet and pretty and innocent. it has been many man years since a child slept on my lap, so many i can't remember. but i do have my leg go to sleep from sleeping Jake or baby and i don't move them either. there is something about a sleeping child that causes us to stop and stare and feel feelings we don't feel when they are up moving around. great post and see you Tuesday

Such sweet pictures, Ginny. My little 2 yr old friend from across the street, often comes to visit and falls asleep in my lap. As you say, my arms go to sleep but I don't dare move and wake her!

How sweet they look when they sleep. It's been a long time since I've had a little one fall asleep in my lap. No grandchildren here so I'll have to settle for Duke :)

I love these pictures. For me the best part of holding a baby or very young child is to have them fall asleep in my arms. My son did not want me to hold Kai as she fell asleep, but I told him that I would not give up that pleasure. I won,he lost and Kai slept well. LOL

I loved watching my children sleep, to watch the rise and fall of their little tummies and little movements. It all seems so long ago........

Oh, yes, Ginny...there is just something about their complete trust in us. Sometimes just the way the snuggle into your lap, whether sleeping or just resting. It is one of the best feelings in the world.

I remember those days with my son. I still enjoy seeing him sleep. The girls look so precious!

Oh you got both of them to sleep. I remember those days too. It seems if I remember correctly that them laying on your lap makes you kind of slow down too - and more peaceful. Right.

Such sweet adorable pictures of Ella and Anne Marie! The last time I had kids sleeping on me were my young sons...now that seems like ages ago. But as I read your description it made me think about the softness of their breaths and the sheer joy of having/holding them when they were little.

Oh Ginny, I just love these sleeping pictures. I've noticed that you're the only one not sleeping on them though.. well, maybe Anne Marie's almost awake?? My Rissi or Jake never nap during the day for me, so I cannot relate. But this is such an adorable post. I love your header... how sweet and innocent!!
