Glad All Over

A house about three blocks away has their front yard covered in gladiolas.

As I snapped, this guy watched me from an upstairs window box.

I have always really disliked Gladiolas. In large part, because they are the most abundant at funerals. So even the smell of them reminds me of death. Is there any beautiful flower that you really dislike?

And here on this mountain, God will banish
the pall of doom hanging over all peoples,
The shadow of doom darkening all nations.
    Yes, he’ll banish death forever.
And God will wipe the tears from every face.
He’ll remove every sign of disgrace
From his people, wherever they are.
    Yes! God says so!

Isaiah 25

They are pretty but they often wither nastily too. I can understand why you dislike the association of the flowers at funeral.

I love glads because my mother grew them. They remind me of her. I associate gardenias with funerals.

I wish I could grow some like these! I grew ONE last year!

these glads are gorgeous! I had 2 boquets of white glads at my wedding, because they were the cheapest way to go. Mother loved them. now that i think about having funeral flowers at the wedding might have been a foretelling of the disaster it would become.

Those are really pretty. I'm curious how they get them to all keep standing up. I remember having these in our yard when I was growing up and they were always so top heavy they were bent over.
I can't think of any flowers that I don't like.

They are so pretty! We used to have a neighbor whose whole yard was filled with iris. The pictures reminded me of that yard.

Love the promise found in Isaiah...
I never thought of Glads as funeral flowers.
They sure come in a variety of colors and are so tall and stately.
I really like them,
Can't think of a beautiful flower that I dislike.

I think they're pretty but you're right about their funereal associations. I feel that way about stargazer lilies ... their smell is so overwhelming that they remind me of funerals. I'm not sure why. I love love love that white cat! xoxo

I've never thought of gladiolus as being funeral flowers - Years ago when I sold crafts, I used to do this one show called the Gladiolia Festival. The whole place was overwhelmed by that fragrance. I'd love to grow some - just have never gotten around to it.
Love the cat on the windowsill.

First of all, that's a stunning header photo Ginny. A wonderful series of photos and a lovely verse from Isaiah. The white house reminds me of a European cottage.

Flowers remind me too of funerals, but they are pretty too. My grandma was named Glady's for them.

I'm not one for the gladiolas either, but this house is charming. That cat looks cute just resting there in the window box. That's a great photo, Ginny. To answer your question, I've never been too fond of the Iris' flower. I don't really like tall floppy flowers. I like more sturdy ones, like the rose, of course. ; )
