The Poppies

The Poppies are just done blooming here. They always make me think of the scene in The Wizard Of Oz where Dorothy and her friends fell asleep while skipping through a field of Poppies.

Did you know there are white Poppies? I only saw them once, and was so glad I had my camera!

"Poppy seeds are as fine as dust, and the petals as delicate as fairy shawls."

That ending quote is a great description. Your photos of the poppies are gorgeous! I have never seen a white poppy.

Fairy shawls...great, poetic, comparison. I've even seen pink poppies (Europe, I think).

Your Poppies are so pretty. I can see that you like to take pictures of nature, and I think we'll get along just fine, as nature is one of my favorite places to be. Thank you for following along, I appreciate that so much. You know, this orange Poppy is California's state flower. I see them all the time along the edges of the countryside. We aren't supposed to pick them though. I look forward to more of your wonderful posts.

Happy July!

funny you should ask if i had seen white poppies, i have never seen a red poppy except in photos. I told another blogger who bouhgt a ceramic poppy for her military dad memory, that until I started blogging I did not know what a poppy was or that people use them as memorial day reminders. i don't think they grow in the south, but not sure

I don't have one poppy in my yard, believe it or not. I'm going to have to work on changing that. Your are beautiful, Ginny, and I can picture that scene from The Wizard of Oz immediately!! ~Andrea xoxoxo

Icelandic Poppies are my favorites. So delicate and many different colors.
My folks had these in their garden...always beautiful and they were delicate like fairy shawls...
Thanks for the memories.

I did not know there were white poppies!
In the very south of Sweden there are plenty of wild red poppies, but around here (and further north) they are rare (and the few seen in the wild around here probably sown or escaped from some garden...)

In Flanders Fields the the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

2018 marked the centennial of WW1. In the US, it largely passed without notice. Those of us in the historical community used the opportunity to stimulate research into this era, as memory of it vanishes.
