A year or so ago, whenever we would go to McDonalds, we would park at the edge of the parking lot beside a beautiful large Mimosa tree. We would open the car windows, eat, and enjoy the wonderful evening smell of the tree. It was a real treat. They recently dug it up to build apartments. Here is maybe the largest I have seen, just a month or two ago.
They are considered junk trees, but what a wonderful evening smell they have.
There is evidence that the extracts from mimosa bark and
roots possess strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also
has a reputation in traditional medicine as an effective treatment for wounds
and skin problems. In some countries, mimosa roots are used to make a warm
paste which is then placed over wounds to prevent bleeding and relieve itching.

It’s always sad when big trees have to be cut down. But people need to live. I hope the apartments are at least affordable. A trend that is going on here is houses being built all over the place referred to as Executive homes and definitely not affordable. Same with the townhouses and condos. I remember as a kid the old tract homes that were brand new, and affordable to first time buyers. They don’t have those anymore. No wonder we have so many homeless. Sad.
This may be junk to some but it is treasure to me. How sad that this beautiful tree is gone.
I had no idea they have a scent. after reading I know why. I don't go out at night, I am the early bird. they are common here and even more common in Savannah... I lived all these many years with them and never knew the scent. sad to see any tree go down for me especially flowering ones. I can attest to the fact that these type of trees require a lot of maintenance and most people who buy a home with one take them down. they drop limbs, large and small and flowers . we had an ear tree in St Pete and it is very similar to this, jacaranda is the real name. it was a dirty tree and we loved it
How sad that they would dig up a tree to build apartments. Too bad they couldn't have built around it. This is just too pretty. I've never seen one.
The fluffy flowers are so surreal
That is really sad to me. That is what is happening here too - we had so many trees when we first moved here - big ones - and they cut them down for apartments. I think that tree and the fluffy pink flowers were beautiful!
I guess all I can say is DITTO to what everyone else has posted.
Lovely, messy and can be invasive but too pretty to get rid of.

This saddens me....It is so sad to see a big healthy tree completely done away with....and for me, Mimosa trees are so special as I have so many childhood memories of the mimosa's in our yard. They do have the sweetest fragrance....
It's such a pretty tree. Too bad that it is being dug up to build apartments. Although, there are people who need housing, so I can understand. The tree in the first photo looks a bit different than the blossoms in the last picture. I really miss our McDonald's up here. Like you, I used to just park, eat, and enjoy the view of Mount Shasta.

What a shame they had to dig up those trees. This one is gorgeous! I did know that it was antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, but it doesn’t surprise me. There were a lot of remedies that I thought were old wives tales, but more and more I am finding that there’s a lot of truth in some of these old remedies.
I have always found mimosa trees fascinating...I don't know why I didn't ever get one for my yard.
They. Dug. It. Up. To. Build. APARTMENTS? Nooooooooooo! Say it is not so! That is heartbreaking! I love the look and smell of a mimosa tree! They remind me of my childhood. Mama called them powder puff trees. xoxo
