Swords

I spotted this strange looking plant the other day in a garden center, and had my camera with me. It's called a Flaming Sword, and is a Bromeliad. This type of plant needs no soil! They are native to Venezuela, where they grow on rocks or tree trunks. They are sold in soil filled pots, though, and will do alright that way, as well. They absorb all needed nurtients through the air. There was a song called "All I Need Is The Air That I Breathe", and this Flaming Sword reminds me of that. We need air for our physical body, but the word of the Lord for our spirit. So here is another sword, one that penetrates to our very depths.

"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight." Hebrews 4:12

It is good your garden center lets you take photos. Some of the don't. i once was given this plant, but it didn't survive.

You are right about the double edge sword.

Have a good day tomorrow, we have almost finished ours, and it is school.

Everyone who goes to Rotorua remember the awful smell. I wonder if you get it at Yellow stone national Park. Imagine, it was used as a beauty aid!!!!!

Have a blessed and restful day today... love this plant. At first I thought it was some sort of croton...
My mom loves orchids and has several... they too do not really need the soil and most are potted in a bark mix of some sort. I leave them to her.

Just jumping back in to answer your questions, Ginny. The Austin family comes first for a week alone with us. They share the next week with the Connecticut family. The Cconnecticut family then spends the third week alone with Bob and I. I do take my own pictures. Take care...Mary

I've seen these as indoor plants, don't think I ever had one. Beautiful when they're in bloom like that.

They are another favorite. We have a little variety being this is the tropics but the mosquitoes enjoy the water that collects in the base (like a vase)..tree frogs that are relatively new here also like to hide in there. Still, it doesn't stop most of us from keeping them, though a lady at a nursey nearby told me they had to get rid of them because of those frogs! Anyway, lovely verse and photos Ginny-

What a pretty Bromeliad, I don't remember seeing this one before. I do see how it got its name, it does look like a flaming sword. Great photos Ginny.

Makes me think of the angel with the 'flaming sword' that stood guard outside the garden of Eden.
We don't see these in our gardens.

What an interesting plant. We should get some of those to grow on all the rocks around here.

Oh Ginny... thanks for posting this. My Mom used to have one of these in her garden and I found them very interesting and exotic. When she past away, they all died too because I didn't take care of them. I miss mom.

This is something I have seen before but never knew the name of. It is not one of my favorite flowers but does look very nice in the right spot.
