I Gotta Crow

Besides splashing in our puddle, the crows around here have been gathering nesting materials. And I've been thinking about another Billy story that my brother-in-law just told me. Remember how Billy loved shiny things? Well, someone put out a shiny dime, then tried to grab it when he saw Billy go after it. Guess who won? Billy got the dime. There is much folklore about crows, esperially among the Native Americans. My favorite story is from the Sioux Tribe. In days long past, all crows were white. The crows were friends with the buffalo, and sitting up high in the trees, they could see when the indians came to hunt the buffalo. So the crows would warn the buffalo. The indians began to starve because they could get no buffalo meat. So by trickery, they managed to catch the leader and largest of the crows. While having a tribal council meeting to decide what to do, one impetuous man grabbed the crow and threw him into the fire. The crow escaped, but his wings were black from being badly charred. From then on, all crows were black, and stayed away from the buffalo. Several people have asked me how I was able to act so fast getting pictures when I saw the bathing crow. Simple, I keep my camera beside the kitchen window. Whether I'm doing the dishes, or other kitchen work, I'm keeping an eye out the window. I'm always watching.

"But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Saviour; my God will hear me."
Micah 7:7

"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back - whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn...What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch!" Mark 13:35

Hi Ginny, my bird loves shiny things as well-thats fast! I'm sure the Mynas are very similar..I call them crows. You know they can talk too! Well, I like your captures and I try to bring my camera with me along with charged batteries! The old story and verses are terrific! I'm not sure if its Ravens or Crows (probably related), when I was visiting in Arizona I heard they'd perch above traffic lights then drop nuts so the cars would run them over- cracking them for them! Smart huh..then maybe when the coast was clear they'd scoop um up. Oh, thank you for your great feedback- I always look forward to it! I left a comment there too because I included a link. Thanks for your comment about the poem too. Hope you have a wonderful evening-

Great shots of the crows Ginny, it's good to keep the camera close.

I really enjoyed the story about how the crow got his color. I am always fascinated by Native American legends and stories. When I lived in Anchorage we had Ravens everywhere. I did a post last year on one of the stories I learned about the ravens: http://squirrelqueen2.blogspot.com/2009/04/raven-steals-sun.html

I like crows! When we were in Houston last month, we saw a lot of black birds but I don't think they were crows because they were bigger and more elongated--sort of. Now I know everything in Texas is bigger but.....! Drat, I didn't even take a photo. I think I heard one of them utter "nevermore" so maybe they were ravens!

I'm curious as to what kind of camera you have. I would really like to get a better camera. Maybe you told me before? I'm making a list so, if you want some input, let me know.

Have a great weekend.

Best,
Bonnie

I also like crows. They are interesting to watch. They spend a lot of time in my back yard and Hank gets in lion formation and hunches down and watches them from the kitchen window. How he would like to get out there. Another bird like we don't have here in Arizona. Magpies like Idaho and whenever I'm up there I watch them. When I was a child I used to think they were so pretty with their black and white.
